Mobster and hit man Jimmy Conlon has one night to figure out where his loyalties lie: with his estranged son, Mike, whose life is in danger, or his longtime best friend, mob boss Shawn Maguire, who wants Mike to pay for the death of his own son. Run All Night is another very impressive and well directed Liam Neeson movie that is truly quite underrated to be honest. Joel Kinnaman, Common, Ed Harris and the whole cast in general was excellent. The action was terrific with a very good set of cinematography and packed with lots of suspense too. (10/10)

RUN ALL NIGHT marks the third collaboration between star Liam Neeson and director Jaume Collet-Serra; their previous movies were the disappointing UNKNOWN and the above-average NON-STOP. RUN ALL NIGHT falls somewhere in the middle of those two films in terms of quality; it's a good enough mob thriller although not quite good enough to be considered a classic or indeed a regular watch. The film's very familiarity is what works against it throughout. Neeson and his adult son, played by Joel Kinnaman, are forced to go on the run from mob boss Ed Harris when things go bad, and the film follows the situation from there. It's set over a single night, which gives it some fun, but the story has been done before and done better, for example in Sam Mendes' ROAD TO PERDITION.This means you end up watching the film to enjoy the other qualities. If a thriller's plotting is unremarkable then it must have outstanding action scenes, and the action in RUN ALL NIGHT is fun although not quite spellbinding. The bit in the subway station and the attack in the burning apartment complex are both good scenes but there are too many slow bits in the middle, and the two hour running time is half an hour too long. Collet-Serra can't do a proper transition scene without some lame CGI effects of the sped-up camera flying up in the sky and across the city, which I found quite tiresome after a while.In terms of the cast, Neeson is on autopilot in this one. He looks old and tired and you wonder how much of that is really acting. Harris is suitably imposing as the antagonist of the piece, but his role is a virtual reprise of the one he played in A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE. Best of the bunch is the great Kinnaman, of the EASY MONEY trilogy, but he's kept off the screen for way too long. RUN ALL NIGHT is a fine enough slice of entertainment for genre fans but it's one of those films which simply doesn't hold up if you think about it too long.

"Danny Maguire" (Boyd Holbrook) is the impetuous son of a mob boss who wants to show his father "Shawn Maguire" (Ed Harris) his ability to assume an increasing role in the business. So one day he makes a deal with an Albanian drug cartel by guaranteeing them his father's resources in exchange for some money. However, when his father refuses to do business with them this leaves Danny in a bind and rather than return the money decides to kill the Albanian negotiators instead. Unfortunately, Danny is spotted by a young man named "Mike Conlon" (Joel Kinnaman) and rather than having any witnesses decides to kill him as well. What Danny doesn't count on is Mike's father--and infamous mob hit man-- "Jimmy Conlon" (Liam Neeson) showing up during the process. Within seconds Danny is killed and this leaves both Jimmy and Mike at odds with Shawn who now swears revenge on both of them. Now rather than reveal any more I will just say that this was a pretty good action-packed movie which greatly benefited by the presence of Liam Neeson and Ed Harris. Although the ending was a bit clichéd I still enjoyed it and I have rated this film accordingly. Slightly above average.

Run All Night is a good movie with a reasonably well developed plot and a terrific cast. It is an enjoyable thriller that is constantly moving, there is never really a dull moment. It's always pushing forward, keeping you at the edge of your seat, mostly due to effective performances from Liam Neeson and Ed Harris. However, the fact that it is constantly moving is also a flaw in a way, as it never really takes time to develop the characters. We learn significantly little about Jimmy, despite the fact he is the protagonist, there is not much scope given to the character, making it difficult to connect with him and the journey he is going on because of that. As well as that, it is quite a typical affair, there really is nothing new or groundbreaking in this film. It is all expected, every twist and turn that occurs throughout has happened in several other films prior and in a more effective manner. You can get a clear sense of a movie that was solely made for money, one that never tries to do anything even remotely different, that's exactly what this was. It is certainly a fun watch, but if you are looking for something new, Run All Night is not for you, worth the watch if you are looking for a good thriller, just do not go out of your way to see it.
