fishy246 A move that will never get old you will feel like you are one of the characters and you were fall in love with the characters everything about this movie is so heartwarming and it is truly a good movie I love the stay line and I also love johnny depp his character in the movie is awesome and he is super cute this is a movie I could watch over and over again
cricketbat What's Eating Gilbert Grape is a very odd film. And while everyone in the cast does a good job, Leonardo DiCaprio stands out with one of the most convincing performances I've seen in a long time. At times, I forgot Arnie was the same guy from Inception. I probably won't make a habit of watching this movie, but I'm glad I finally saw it.
Tss5078 Sometimes the best performance come in a film that just doesn't deserve them. Everyone knows of Gilbert Grape, but not because it is a classic film that deserves to stand the test of time, rather it is the film that launched two of the biggest careers in Hollywood. Gilbert Grape (Johnny Depp) is barely old enough to drink, yet he is the man of the house, forced to raise his brother and sisters, and care for his obese mother. Gilbert lives in the middle of nowhere, works a terrible job, and his future doesn't look so bright, that is until a girl, traveling cross-country with her grandmother, breaks down in his town. A relationship blossoms and Gilbert finally discovers that life has been passing him by. The story here is simple and at many points extremely slow moving. This film was just meant to be a backwards love story, but has become so much more, because of Depp and Leonardo DiCaprio. The two young stars gave everything they had and more, with so little to work with, that their performances became absolutely legendary. What's Eating Gilbert Grape is not a good film, but you will be hard pressed to find one performance, must less two as good as the ones in this film. The feeling and emotion that come along with their joys and despair is something you just can't teach, either you have it or you don't. Both these actors will make you feel every emotion of their characters and make you take a look inside yourself in a way that few film will ever do. I hated the story, but I recommend this film for nothing else than it's performances. If every performance were as good as these, there wouldn't be a need to rate and review films.
CinemaClown Heartfelt, poignant & amusing in equal doses, What's Eating Gilbert Grape is a wonderfully crafted, sensibly narrated & brilliantly acted coming-of-age drama that offers an intriguing glimpse into the everyday life of a dysfunctional family and is powered by stellar performances from Johnny Depp & Leonardo DiCaprio.Set in a small American town, the story of What's Eating Gilbert Grape follows its titular character who has put his own life on shelf after his father's death in order to take care of his morbidly obese mother & mentally disabled younger brother and has been struggling to make ends meet for his family but all of it is challenged when love enters Gilbert's life.Directed by Lasse Hallström, the film begins on a slow note and while the pace never really picks up at any given point, it does allow its characters to breathe freely & adds sizeable depth to their arcs. The small-scale town life is elegantly captured and the lifeless surrounding further amplifies the hopeless situation our protagonist finds himself to be trapped in.However, the most impressive aspect of What's Eating Gilbert Grape is the input from both Johnny Depp & Leonardo DiCaprio. Depp chips in with a highly layered performance that clearly expresses his character's inner turmoil but it's the then-young DiCaprio who effortlessly steals the show with a tender, effective & thoroughly compelling work that will always be counted amongst his finest acts to date.On an overall scale, What's Eating Gilbert Grape expertly covers the themes of familial burdens, brotherhood, responsibility, caring, love, bonding & self-awareness and is at its most enchanting when the screen is shared by Depp & DiCaprio for their chemistry is absolutely spot-on here and easily overshadows the rest of the aspects. Although my experience with it was somewhat underwhelming, it's still worth a shot for DiCaprio's show-stopping turn alone.
