GL84 Getting stranded in a freak snowstorm, a group of friends seeking shelter in a supposedly-abandoned asylum find it still inhabited by cannibalistic inmates housed there years ago hunting them down one- by-one and must find a way of getting away from the vicious killers. This was a rather fun and entertaining entry in the series which has a lot to like about it. One of the better parts here is with it managing to feature even more of the usual elements found in the last entries which comes off as a rather coherent connection to become that much more entertaining. That is mostly brought along by the film's great setting, as the large, cavernous structure with it's long, looming hallways, tight quarters and hidden rooms are used to good effect in both creating effective atmospheric locations and perfect areas for them to display their cruel tactics. It's also helped along by the raging storm and isolated nature while also taking into account the film's backstory about how they got freed and are now roaming the hospital grounds which is a great introductory scene of them running loose and leading the other inmates through their takeover of the hospital. When that leads into the later action scenes of them inside the building, there's quite a bit of fun on display with the stalking and hunting which are spread nicely throughout this, from the first walk-through where they see the shadows running throughout the hallways, the encounter in the kitchen where they first come across the family carving up their friend which starts in on the fun noose trap in the main hall and the resulting chases down into the basement as well as the different offices in the upper floors. The later scenes here, with the attack on the family who are gorging on their friend and leading into the first trap scene down in their jail cell is quite fun and the big finale is a series of chases through the main levels of the building and then outside into the surrounding woods which gives this all quite a bit of fun. All of these great action scenes are given a great sense of fun here as the gore and kills here are both over- the-top here, featuring numerous amounts of splatter and carnage which allow the film to be pretty brutal at times with some innovative torturing methods all of which give this one here a lot to like. While these here are the positives, it does have a few minor elements wrong with it, starting with the absolutely ludicrous decision-making by the characters which puts them into dangerous situations for that reason only, and it does hurt this one. From failing to leave once they know they're friends are missing and have bloodied equipment laying around and then have them trapped yet decide not to do anything which lets them come back later just lets this one feel so dragged out because their lack of rationale and common sense in the situation simply keeps them in trouble. As well, it's finale does seem to run on forever and get old after a while since it's not really all that clear what's going on with all the endless running around the same locations in the snow-covered woodlands surrounding the asylum, and it seems somewhat repetitive to keep going back to that same well of attack. Still, this here is a blast and quite enjoyable.Rated R: Extreme Graphic Violence, Graphic Language, Nudity and drug use.
Sandcooler The "Wrong Turn"-franchise may not bring many new ideas (even the first one was microwaved "Texas Chain Saw"), but I love how pretty much every installment delivers the goods. You just watch these movies to see irritating people dying horrible deaths, and this fourth entry is definitely no disappointment. What I love most about this movie is how it wallows in its own vast stupidity. My favorite dumb part is the part where a guy tries to save a girl from being hung by...pulling her legs? I'm pretty sure that only makes the situation worse. Splitting up from the group because you want to retrieve a weapon you've never used before, as it's probably useless? Makes perfect sense in this alternate reality. Saying you'll be fine if your friend leaves even though you'll be all alone, completely exposed, already wounded and with no way to defend yourself? Sure, it's important to have confidence. And the less said about the infamous scene with the burlap sack, the better. There's only one character with a vague idea of common sense, and he's mocked constantly and mercilessly. Oh really, you don't want to take a long trip in the freezing cold right before dark? Oh really, you don't want to sleep in that creepy abandoned hospital? Oh really, you don't want to split up from the group when there are three insane cannibals running around? What are you, a coward? Well no, he just has brain waves more active than a wine cellar. Kinda funny in a morbid way how this character gets the longest, most painful death. The one time the rest of the group (they still greatly outnumber the cannibals at this point) actually has a valid reason to go back, they basically just wait around until the screaming stops. They even have time to VOTE whether or not they go back while their friend is being cut into pieces. The fact that they easily corner the villains minutes later just makes it funnier (what's wrong with me?). And even though rednecks killing people is a trope that has been going on for decades, I really dig the design of these villains. Because of chintzy production values their appearance can differ between movies, but Three Finger, One Eye and Saw Tooth all have fun little trademarks. Every new "Wrong Turn" is like seeing your old friends again, doing away with yet another batch of people you never want to see in anything else. Once they encounter anybody remotely intelligent I'm pretty sure they're all toast, but until then their creative kills are pretty entertaining. The best one in part four: the fate of the guy that runs their asylum. He totally had it coming, sorta. Also great for a laugh: the magnificent ending scene, which I genuinely wasn't expecting. "Wrong Turn 4" is more of a comedy than a horror movie, but it caters to the fans of both genres.
Michael_Elliott Wrong Turn 4 (2011) ** 1/2 (out of 4) A group of friends go out for a snowmobiling trip when they get lost looking for a cabin. With a major snow storm coming in they decide to take shelter at an abandoned mental sanatorium but they don't realize that there are three mutant cannibals inside.Writer-director Declan O'Brien certainly makes up for the incredibly awful WRONG TURN 3 by making a pretty darn good slasher that manages to give us some likable characters and some memorable gore scenes. When I noticed that the same person behind the previous film was doing this one I was extremely nervous but I wonder if the filmmakers saw the problems with the third film and decided to fix them here because there's no doubt that everything is much better in this fourth outing. For starters, changing up the formula by getting out of the woods and entering an indoor location helped. Some might say this isn't a "WRONG TURN movie" but I'd argue that the series needed a change and it actually works here. Another major plus is that all nine of the humans and the three mutants are well-written and likable. I think it always helps a horror film like this one when you've got characters that you like and ones that you can root for because that helps keep you mentally into the movie. We get the typical stereotypes but the actors do a nice job in their roles and help bring them to life. Even the three mutants are much better here as they've each got a personality and there's no question that you hate them and want to see them get theirs. The biggest improvement with WRONG TURN 4 are the kill scenes. While there are still some really bad looking CGI effects, they've also went back to some practical ones and they look extremely good. It certainly helps that we're given some extremely brutal, graphic but original death scenes including the highlight of the movie a torture sequence where one poor man is tied down, skinned and eaten while he watches. Most squeamish people will be losing during this sequence. There are countless other body parts being chopped off, stabbings and other brutalities that will appeal to those who seek out gore.WRONG TURN 4 follows a horrid entry in the series and this at least helps get it back on track.
bowmanblue No, seriously, I only found out I'd watched a prequel when I looked it up on the internet after sitting through the film. So, that would explain why it's an 'origin' story of those three inbred hillbillies. Basically, they escaped from a secure institution and went on to kill people. That's the backstory. Did they really need to stretch it into an hour and a half? A group of teenagers - the girls all enormously attractive, wearing tight-fitting tops - and the boys all sporting mock-Justin Bieber haircuts - all go on a skiing trip, but end up in a old asylum (does it really matter why?). Then, after spending the night loudly partying and fondling each other, they discover the hillbillies are in there. You can probably guess what happens next.Yes, there's some decent gore, but it's extreme gore in place of a story or characters. Seriously, this is one of those films where you're on the baddies' side. The teens are so obnoxious you'll be cheering when they're offed one by one - possibly payback for their lousy acting? The original 'Wrong Turn' movie was a nice little horror gem. However, as we sit here with number 4, it's really just wringing as much money as you can out of a name. This felt like it could have been called anything - it's the ultimate generic horror/slasher film. No, it's not terrible, but I sat through it with a sense that I couldn't care about anything in it because I'd seen it all before...better.http://thewrongtreemoviereviews.blogspot.co.uk/
