daviddaveinternational Pickers is fake. Sure, they appear at various places but that's about the "reality" of it. The show is "scripted". Look at the massive list of "directors". "Reality" can't be "directed". Anyway, I've been, for the last year or so, been trying to get ahold of Mike Wolfe through their email. He doesn't seem to exist! I get responses to my inquiries by some unnamed person telling me that they will pass on my message to Mike. Now, my messages have been: "I'd like to speak with Mike Wolfe, please" and am ignored. He can't be that busy! The show isn't filmed every week. They film a year or a season's episodes in 2 or 3 months, leaving the rest of the time open. Now, since they're supposedly a "business" and "sell stuff", why wouldn't they respond to a potential customer? I've asked multiple times to purchase the BSA sign seen in the shop finally to be told: "It's not for sale". Well, take it down, then! I own a rare motorcycle that's been featured in 3 magazines including Hemming's Motor News and Motorcycle Classics Magazine and am sure if this "Mike Wolfe" character truly existed, he'd surely be interested in checking out my bike. I get nothing but: "Leave a message to Mike. We'll be sure he gets it." Well, my message is "I want to speak with MIKE!" Surely they have computer access! Yes, I still watch the show but now look at Mike Wolfe with contempt. To ignore repeated correspondence from not only a viewer but a potential customer, well, that's egotistical and self-centered. By the way, The History Channel and it's sponsors all pay the "Pickers" purchasing costs because how can a business that doesn't exist have any money? I mean, how much money can be made driving half way across the country to buy a half dozen items at 30% less than you might sell them for? Plus, who pays the fuel and crew for the helicopter and crew's vehicle that follows them around? As a former member of the United Sates Army's 14th Aviation (rotary wing) Battalion, I can certainly tell you it isn't cheap to fly a helicopter! Where's the profit..? Think about it...
imno007-2 It's a great little show if you have realistic expectations. First off, just because it's on the History Channel does NOT mean it's primarily a history program, and I'm pretty sure Mike and Frank don't think of themselves as historians. Doesn't make much sense to expect that Frank and Mike wouldn't do the show and make all that money because they didn't feel it was "ethical" that they might be letting down the hard-core history fans who watch the channel. I'd tell those history fans to come back to reality. If they want to be mad about the show being on the channel, maybe write the History Channel to complain instead of coming here to give the show a poor rating/review. I used to watch the Syfy Channel and get exasperated with all the wrestling shows they used to have on there, wondering what the heck wrestling had to do with science fiction, but I didn't blame wrestling, I blamed the Syfy Channel.Second, Mike and Frank run a business and they're in it to make money, just like all businesses. So if you can't watch the show without getting angry they they try to get the best deal they can to maximize their profits, then just stay away. A lot of people on here seem to forget that running a business also means paying for overhead, for building space and employee salaries, etc., it isn't just a matter of looking at how much can be made on an individual item and that's it. And if sellers want to make maximum profits on their collectibles and junk, they can get off their butts and sell it on eBay or at an auction, or wherever else. Having said that, though, I've seen the guys on numerous occasions tell sellers that they're asking too LITTLE for an item and Mike or Frank offer them more. But if you just mainly like collecting and old stuff, and a "little" history to go along with it all, then it's a fun 45 minutes. I like Mike and Frank, you can tell they've been friends a long time, and they make me laugh. And there's a lot of touching moments on the show. 'Nuff said.
flyercrazygw These guys are so fake, however Frank's cheap and self centered attitude is for real. I've watched this guy haggle over $5 for an item he is going to make a few hundred dollars on, can't stand to watch him wheel and deal with people so I mute the TV when he is ripping off people. Their laughs are so phony and Frank never has anything of value to say, everything he says is so obvious, his grammar is so juvenile and he comes across very uneducated with his comments like "she don't have to know", "he don't know nothing", "we was going to do that", he makes me and thousands of people sick with his cheap dealings, get a clue you little fat piece of crap, people disrespect you because you rip people off "it's just the picker in me", bull!
cobra_freak_006 OK so lets summarize the show real quick. 2 guys go around the US and find items people call junk and they are willing to buy it. simple enough. my dad does this sort of stuff all the time as a hobbie.personally i do like watching the show to see all the cool stuff they find. it reminds me of when my dad and i would go to garage sales, estate sales, or junk yards looking for cool items such as old signs, toys, cigarette machines, phones, etc. i like that and i like seeing it.but the main thing that bothers me with this show is when they pretty much rip people off. yes most of the time the person that owns it doesn't know the real value and mike is like a shark praying on them for it. i saw an episode where mike offered 30 dollars for something and got it for 30 dollars. but in the end the value of the item fully restored was well over 600 dollars. now i also understand what restoration costs can be and they are running a business for the purpose of making a profit. but 30 dollars is a total rip off and I've seen it done several times on this show.
