Grandpre I rewatch it and am astounded every time. Just a fantastic show.
Rainbowpug I just finished binge watching this show after years of meaning to. I've never been a fan of Westerns, though I can no longer claim that. Since I'm a Fear the Walking Dead fan, and two of the actors from that are in Deadwood, I figured this was probably a good time to watch it.I LOVED this show! It was so well-made I felt I could actually feel what it must've been like living in those times. Not only were the sets incredible and the costumes out of this world, but the lighting through the whole thing made me keenly aware throughout the entire thing, that they did NOT have electricity. Now, as far as the acting...Robin Weigert as Calamity Jane was probably the single most entertaining performance in a show I've ever experienced. Hilarious, pitiful, brilliant...for me the show would've been good without her, but it wouldn't have been par excellence. What a chameleon that actress is! All the other actors were good, too, and believable in their roles. Tricky giving Garret Dillahunt two separate rolls, possibly thinking no one would notice, but I did right away. I almost thought it was three roles, since Jeff Cahill, who played Crop Ear, looks very similar to Dillahunt. So hoping there really is going to be a movie!
TownRootGuy But the 30 hours of soap opera between McShane's moments make this show a painful slog through boredom. Olyphant can be great but this was not really a great show for him. If you're a fan of his, skip this and go straight to Justified. Sure, he's got a few moments here but not enough to warrant wading through 36 episodes. I love Molly Parker because of this series but, again, the show just has too much snore to it. There are a lot of great people who show up and have a few moments but this really would have been better condensed down to maybe 5 or 6 hours. I suppose it might be worth seeing once just for Al Swearengen (Swedgin!) but having seen it twice now, I definitely have no interest in seeing it again.
cinemajesty Television Review: "Deadwood" (2004-2006)Created by David Milch, known for long-running hyper-realistic Cop series of the 1990s "NYPD Blue", blows chains open for beyond-belief speeches of sexual reference in a bizarrely-as-realistic-designed title-given Town of U.S. state South Dakota in the late 19th century of post-civil-war environments, where the main show-stealing character Al Swearengen, performed to utmost further celebrity-denying actor Ian McShane, who like no other presents never-seen-before flavors of such inhabited profanity as action toward non-stop adultery that even decent-looking, new-arrivals as second lead Seth Bullock, in match-making as striking appearance put through actor Timothy Olyphant hits just no-way-situations in keeping "clean hands" in constant swear-pushing wild "extremely wild" west "don't give a fuck, shit, cunt, cock-sucking" attitude, which then again nevertheless gets professionally-executed right from the first episode directed by Walter Hill, who makes room for quality-assuring comings from directors as Davis Guggenheim and Tim Van Patten, when director Ed Bianchi keeps the show together in directing 8 of plenty-then-enough 36 episodes to the peaking one "Boy-The-Earth-Talks-To" by a finale furioso of season two, with private marriage, cover-up murder and forth-coming town elections already on the way alongside superb supporting character performances outgoing from even McShane's interpretations of Swearengen exceeding visciousness of actor Powers Boothe (1948-2017) as town-ownership rivaling entrepreneur and politics-driving Cy Tolliver toward wishful-thinking at least glimpses of hope-sharing, better-world-promising Alma Garret, portrayed by balancing the center-staged bar madness between booze, whoring and prawling toward lady-appearing actress Molly Parker to a third season of another 12 episodes revealing conclusions before "Deadwood" becomes far-too-impossible to enjoy for its shear boldness in ripping as exposing false-to-believe western mythologies from the glorious days of John Wayne (1907-1979) acting with John Ford (1894-1973) directing collaborations of Golden Hollywood's 1930s and 1940s.FAZIT: Show recommended (cautioned) © 2018 Felix Alexander Dausend (Cinemajesty Entertainments LLC)
