tunix_2008 I love this show. I used to watch this on Hallmark but until our cable provider stopped airing Hallmark. Anyway, I love this show because the actors look like real people. The setting is awesome. The stories are simple yet not superficial. The description said Doc Martin was a socially inept doctor but when you watch this you realize he really isn't. From the get-go he gets involved with more that his patient's illness but the cause of it which, of course, is the patient's personal life. I love that the characters look like real people -- they fall in love, get heartbroken, go crazy -- young, old, man, woman, and child. I love their first season Valentine's episode because instead of pushing the Martin-Louisa love story, they gave the episode to Joan, Al, and Melanie. I especially love Joan's story.
tonysletterbox I don't know what it was, but my heart, was not in it anymore by S6 Ep3. There seemed to be something wrong with the dialogue and, to a lessor extent, the plots. But the thing that mostly bent my enthusiasm was Ellingham himself. His grumpiness was inspirational to an old grump like myself and there was much to like about this attitude of his from the perspective of his role amongst the rest of the village idiots. And best of all, this grumpiness was equally balanced with a comforting sense of warmth. BUT - from the opening scene of the wedding, the grumpiness was turned up several notches and the warmth was turned down to near freezing. From then on things just became downright stuffy. As if they had lost their initial enthusiasm for the show and just pushed the absurdities a little too far out, not least in the performance of PC Joe Clouseau Jnr.
Kaptain Bluddflagg I started watching this show recently and have thoroughly enjoyed it. The characters are interesting and have a lot of depth, the writing is both sharp and subtle. The only complaints that I have about the show is that the first two receptionists are basically the same character, the second more fleshed out than the first, and they are both horrible, despicable people. So bad, in fact, that I nearly stopped watching because of the second. The only other complaint that I have is that there is very little actual development for the main character. Doctor Ellingham more or less stays exactly the same throughout the whole show, only coming out of his shell to say something about his feelings at precisely the right time to keep his on again off again love interest from fleeing. He doesn't grow as a person as much as he reacts to whatever the latest bit of drama is, and while I love his character I find it hard to believe that he is so incapable of changing. Even a small change would be nice, but then I suspect that the show might have to change its focus a bit too much. All in all, I highly recommend this show, but if you are like me be prepared to be frustrated by irritating assistants and lack of growth from the main character.
MartinHafer "Doc Martin" is a very enjoyable British series that has so far run six seasons--short seasons by American standards and often coming out a couple years apart. Despite this and the occasional turnover of cast members, the show is very well written and enjoyable. My only complaint is that a couple of the characters wear a bit thin, as the writers insist on a couple buffoon-like characters for comic relief. The worst of these is Police Constable Penhale who is just too idiotic to believe. To a lesser extent, the same could be said about Bert Large. Fortunately, the other characters and story lines are excellent and make up for occasional lapses. Overall, it's a very well crafted and enjoyable show about a curmudgeonly doctor with abysmal people skills and the bizarre, almost "Green Acres"-like community in which he lives.
