Reviews

emil_hohmann-90375 I haven't watched the show in years and barely remembered it. Then i saw it available on Amazon Prime. I like older shows better than anything out today, so i cued it up. Season one started fast and got a little slow. But, it was intellectual, made you think deep, and start hungering for the truth about the hidden agenda of the Taelons. I knew right away in the episode with the probe, that it was not Taelon tech. That made a new and enticing possibility appear... would the Taelons turn to our side and completely open up as equals with the humans, or be destroyed by the hidden enemy? Then, we get to the end of season one... My favorite character gets killed... Left me fearful for season two...Season two.. A bland replacement for Boone arrives and the series seemingly struggles to regain its footing. A new evil Taelon arrives on the scene. Far more polarizing than the original bad guy, who gets more "good" but stays pretty ambiguous. By the end of the season though, the new lead (Liam) finds his place and takes over the show.Season three things start to develop more and deeper secrets are revealed...Season four things start to feel a little dragged out and convoluted.. But it has some really good episodes and starts to close some loops. The climax of the season leaves you expecting a very satisfying conclusion.Season 5.... Oh, what to say... WTF!? is what sums it up the best. They destroyed the huge opportunity they had to make the series conclude as one of the best scifi series ever! Killing off the lead...again.. and making the Attivus look nothing like the images of themselves in the earlier seasons, and making them "energy vampires" that had none of the sophistication of either of the their progenitor species, destroyed the mythos and any semblance of constancy, and thus destroyed the series all together. the plot was bad, the writing was worse, and the best of what the series had to offer was tossed with the best characters in the series. I could not get past episode 2. The executives should be fired and then have all their profits taken and given back to the fans. They should live in shanty's for the rest of their lives.
Phillip Moss I remember watching this show when it originally aired and thinking that it was great. Its time slot was inconvenient and I didn't use the VCR to record it. I went back in the last year and watched it from start to finish. It starts out great. The first few season kept enough good/interesting writing to fend off some the bad acting. Kind of like how Babylon 5 used great storytelling to overcome some supporting actor performances and very low budget. This show reminds me of how awesome the mind of people like Gene Rodenberry could be. The caveat is the last two seasons. It basically goes from cool and engaging (ie Boba Fett) to many WTF moments. Just like with Jar Jar I can't imagine anyone sitting in a writers room saying, "that sounds like a great idea! Gungans." (There are no Gungans in Earth FInal Conflict). Leni Parker did a great job and helped the show out a ton. Its certainly worth a look at the first few seasons and if you're like me then it means watching the whole thing.
mshockle OK, so bear with me here but I liked the series up until the end of season 4. I wont repeat what other reviews have said about the frequent writing and acting staff changes aside from saying that it made a steady ship appear to be going through a storm with no end in sight. Fairly weak characters and lack of continuity was patched as it went along and a chemistry developed that kept you watching the series because the series still had a strong premise that the writing staff continued to explore from time to time. The failure of this series came with all sorts of filler episodes that had little to contribute and often repeated things from previous episodes. I kept waiting for Da'an to come out of hiding and slap Zo'or off of his Machavellian ego trip. Sandoval was a character who started out as a nothing prick with little airtime and was put into the driver seat of the antagonist's van to prevent the show from looking like Zo'or was doing everything himself.Season 3-4 has Sandoval break away from his role as a Zo'or clone and pursue his own agenda even going so far as to have some moments against Zo'or. In my opinion that breakaway carried the show, and the whole thing with the Jaridians and the resistance was just a little back and forth that kept the engine running to the climax of Season 4 which was passable enough to leave me with the impression that the series ended well. I then discover to my dismay that there is a season 5 and it's very hard to describe my horror that the new theme and Renee Palmer as the lead gave me. Palmer was a good secondary character, and really EFC capitalized on the fact that secondary characters could be rotated in and out of the limelight but putting her in the driver's seat after taking away the Taelons and Jaridians and introducing the Atavus just sucked. I had to stop what I was doing and wrap my head around the fact that this was the same show, and I vowed then and there that I would pretend that season didn't happen. I suggest you do the same and watch only the first 4 seasons as this was an overall fun yet bouncy ride that any sci-fi fan would do well to survey--after all, anything Roddenberry is worth watching even if continuity goes out the window. A 6 out of 10 at best.
Amadio I love sci-fi and am willing to put up with a lot. Sci-fi movies/TV are usually underfunded, under-appreciated and misunderstood. I tried to like this, I really did, but it is to good TV sci-fi as Babylon 5 is to Star Trek (the original). Silly prosthetics, cheap cardboard sets, stilted dialogues, CG that doesn't match the background, and painfully one-dimensional characters cannot be overcome with a 'sci-fi' setting. (I'm sure there are those of you out there who think Babylon 5 is good sci-fi TV. It's not. It's clichéd and uninspiring.) While US viewers might like emotion and character development, sci-fi is a genre that does not take itself seriously (cf. Star Trek). It may treat important issues, yet not as a serious philosophy. It's really difficult to care about the characters here as they are not simply foolish, just missing a spark of life. Their actions and reactions are wooden and predictable, often painful to watch. The makers of Earth KNOW it's rubbish as they have to always say "Gene Roddenberry's Earth..." otherwise people would not continue watching. Roddenberry's ashes must be turning in their orbit as this dull, cheap, poorly edited (watching it without advert breaks really brings this home) trudging Trabant of a show lumbers into space. Spoiler. So, kill off a main character. And then bring him back as another actor. Jeeez! Dallas all over again.
