Movie Guy I remember watching this when I was very young, and when I say very young, I mean very young, lol! I was born in 1994, the year this was aired, but I remember watching it regularly before I even went to preschool, which was 1999. I assume I watched it around 1998, when I was 4, perhaps even 97! But either way, I was probably watching re runs, and I think they lasted for a while. I was little so, I remember demona used to scare the crap out of me when her eyes turned red, and so did Goliath when his eyes turned green, lol! People always said for a boy I matured really fast, I mean I was pretty shy and quite, and maybe they were right, and I think this wonderful show was the beginning of that! I mean I was extremely young, but I loved this show, I mean most kids my age would probably fall asleep, lol! But not me, I loved it, and it's a shame cartoons like this don't air anymore, this show easily earns 10/10! Not sure if this contains spoilers, like if the glowing eyes count, lol! I'll just check the box just in case.
kingputai I must say that I started this series real late. I am happy for that as now I understood the character build-up and complexity in the series. There is no clear distinction of good or evil, which at the time this was made, was prominent in every other series. All characters are a shade of gray. Even the noble Gargoyles have done something evil sometime in the series even if it was for the greater good. All the characters and their corresponding actions have consequences. The characters feel and respond to those actions, develop accordingly. They all have a reason to do whatever they do. It's not just plain vigilant work. The way the creators have mixed science and fantasy, hats off to them. They have also managed to keep the suspense built up across the first two seasons. It's not like they have dealt off all their aces at one go. The secrets and history of the characters are revealed slowly and nicely. The plots and the sub-plots, all make up a wonderful experience.I agree that the third season was not up to the standard the first two reached, but in my opinion, it still is better than many shows being aired even today, be it animation or live action. That being said, I have already recommended this fantastic series to many of my friends, would like to recommend the same to all the readers of this comment too. If you haven't already, please do watch this masterpiece.
richard.fuller1 From the get-go, I didn't like this cartoon. Like the Mighty Orbots years ago, this show relied more on its bombastic introduction to make the show and characters overwhelming than anything else. It would get no better. First, we are promised that the curse can only be broken by "the castle being above the clouds."So I watched to see what play on words this would be. Nope, no play on words. The castle ended up being above the clouds. Strike one.And how did the castle get above the clouds? By a suave, dashing young rogue of a millionaire moving the castle there himself and putting it on top of a skyscraper. How unbelievable was this? Completely unbelievable. After 9-11, such a concept sounds even more ludicrous. Strike Two.The show played on absolutely no trust. So was the Jonathan Frakes character a good guy or not? Was he on the gargoyles' side or not? Are we supposed to believe that the gargoyles are intelligent characters, whether they are from a thousand years in the past or not, if they can't abide by a basic instinct and deduce for themselves what this Zanatos character is about?Or did they figure him out? Then why did they stay with him? It was all too wishy-washy, maybe he is or maybe he isn't. Suspicious looks and glances . .. or were they? Then they were named. Bronx, Brooklyn, Lexington, Hudson. Well, well. Hardly an inviting or welcoming gesture to the children of Forth Worth, Texas, or Toledo, Ohio, I must say. So what is in a name then? Why not name the gargoyles called Spokane (Washington), Selma (Alabama), Boise (Idaho) and Minneapolis, (Minnesota)? Something just tells me Lexington isn't named after the city in Kentucky.Strike Three. But it didn't stop there. I was completely turned off by this show when the Ed Asner gargoyle would declare, upon their being named "You humans have to have a name for everything, don't you?" I thought, what a ridiculous statement to make! He just did his own little bit of name calling by making a reference to all humans based on the one he was speaking to. Isn't there a word for that?I had to stop focusing on anything worthwhile coming from this show after that comment, and it was early on. I haven't seen anything to impress me about it since. The four-legged dog gargoyle has largely been comedy relief, the other gargoyles are small innocents, full of clichés, then the show will take a stab at how "we humans" will fear that which we cannot understand and run screaming from the gargoyles, while Goliath looks on disapproving.Of course it was silly for Goliath to have a name and none of the others do.Just a real clunker for me. Mindless fun to watch if you let it be, but don't think its going to be an interesting or meaningful adventure.
Movie_Poet I was just watching "The Green," and can't help but miss this show. It was what every good cartoon/kids show should be, for it tried to make itself interesting not just to kids but to everyone. The characters, the plot, and everything in Gargoyles was memorable and it's a shame it lasted only 2 seasons. I love rewatching this show, yet I always end up feeling cheated afterwards because a show as good as Gargoyles deserved much better than what it got out of its TV shelf life. As well, I'll always be bothered by never knowing how things turned out for all the characters on the show, even the so-called bad guys. Simply put, Gargoyles is the type of TV show that makes a person proud of television in general.
