stephanie-85859 Got hooked in with the first few episodes, then watched it as a comedy cos it was so bad, especially the acting. Oh and don't expect the people with guns to win in a fight with a sword!!! What nonsense!!!
supermaggie I knew who the killer was from episode one. So much for "really entertaining/thrilling/you do not see it coming". I am just reviewing this because I thought Harper's Island was a big disappointment and expected everybody to see it this way, but it turns out many see it as a benchmark in thriller shows and so I had to throw in my opinion. No, not everybody sees it as a successful thriller show, and all the viewers bitching about other shows like American Gothic (2016) should be tolerant/ be aware that there are people out there who disagree, see it the other way round. I do not think that American Gothic (2016) is the greatest show (esp. with a psychopathic kid running around mutilating poor cats - put the damn kid to sleep or into a cell before it does worse!) but neither is Harper's Island. It is okay that both shows exist, but in my opinion Harper's Island is NOT the better one. Just wanted to give a different opinion.
alexoqp I forced myself to watch up to ep. 4, but then I couldn't take any more of it: nothing makes sense, it is badly written, the characters are designed with such stupidity that you can not identify with any of them. The time line is wonky, the disappearances don't worry anyone ("Maybe he decided to leave the island" ! Yeah, right, you travel hundreds of miles, you're on an island for a wedding, and just on a whim, you go without saying goodbye.) The stag party: they catch at least a cod type of fish, and when they come back, they hand in two obviously shop-bought salmons, the cod has gone! Then you see people wander in all directions for most of that day, when they're all supposed to be having the ones the hen-party, the others the stag-party. They keep on going elsewhere, when does the party begin, and where? Dialogues are poor, characters unbelievable, murders far-fetched (the propeller? how do you pull that one off, unbeknown to all present?, the wooden bridge, the booby-trapped boat? sorry, I can't make myself believe anymore...) poor, poor, poor, and boring eventually, it takes more than action and lots of murder to be entertaining/to avoid being boring. I'm sorry I wasted 4 episodes' worth of my time. Don't bother.
Gubby-Allen My thoughts tend to echo what many have said here. It's starts off fairly run of the mill for a couple of episodes and the end of disc 1 and all two - so up to episode 7, is pretty decent, you think you're onto an OK show. From then on, it is pitiful. You've ignored some of the clichés up to here, but they wipe out every one in the book within a few episodes. I really am amazed episodes 8-12 inclusive were ever approved for broadcast, it's total nonsense. An grey haired, ageing, late 50s killer armed with a small knife is near invincible, taking on anyone, of any strength, even with an arsenal of guns and coming away on top, showing the speed of Usain Bolt to get around and coming out away looking like he's on his way to a job interview.Totally absurd and baffling decisions are made, nobody makes any attempt to swim or row away from the island, they're all quite happy to leave a serial killer physically fully able and 20 yards from away with only some bars separating them while they chuckle and chatter away in the police station.Of course you can clock, hours from the end the clichéd last characters who will be left and who'll survive. Why not show some imagination and have had one or two of the lesser characters have got away, or separately made their way off the island, just to offer something different? In fairness, the final episode isn't awful and does tie up a previous five hours of total nonsense together pretty well in the end, but this was a missed opportunity to have created a decent show that offered something different from the stereotypical teen slasher drivel. Unfortunatey, it was every bit as bad by the end.
