DarthBill A fairly bold retelling of the 1980s classic "He-Man & The Masters of the Universe", the callow, carefree young prince Adam of Eternia, goof off son of the highly respected King Randor, is informed by the beautiful, mysterious Sorceress of Castle Grayskull that he is destined to become He-Man, defender of Eternia, champion of the oppressed, protector of all that is good and just. Initially skeptical of all this, Adam learns it is very true after his father is kidnapped & his home torn up by the evil Lord Skeletor, formerly Keldor, an old enemy of his father. After becoming He-Man (voiced in both forms by Cam Clarke, best remembered as Leonardo from the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon), joining forces with his mentor Man-At-Arms, gal pal Teela, and the Heroic Masters (Stratos, Ram-Man, Man-E-Faces, Buzz-Off, Mek-A-Neck, Roboto, Sy-Clone and Fisto), our big brawny hero finds himself once again battling the evil forces of Skeletor, Count Marzo, King Hiss & the Snakemen, with occasional assistance from Zodak. And yes, Orko and Cringer/Battle Cat are also back and so is Queen Marlena. For the most part, very well written, with stronger characterizations and personality contrasts to the previous versions. About the only thing they did wrong was that Skeletor's henchmen were too stupid (seriously, the 21st century, I thought we were beyond the dumb evil henchmen by now). Though head & shoulders above many lesser shows of today, sadly, Cartoon Network cut this wonderful remake off just when it was starting to get really good. The eventual idea was to bring in Hordak and the Horde, introduce a re-imagined She-Ra, have Teela learn the truth of her heritage (the Sorceress of Grayskull is her mom), but alas, these ambitions were never realized.DAMN YOU CARTOON NETWORK!Well, it's all on DVD now, so they can't take it away from us. Little bit of Trivia: before this series, Cam Clarke had voiced the Marvel comics hero Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic for a Fantastic Four guest spot on Spider-Man's animated series circa 1994. In 2006, Brian Dobson, who voiced Skeletor/King Hiss/Buzz-Off/etc. in this series, would take on the role of Ben Grimm/the Thing for "Fantastic Four: World's Greatest Heroes".
Ken-120 I used to watch the original He-Man series, but eventually I grew out of it after realizing just how poorly budgeted and written it was, albeit with with notable exceptional episodes. However, this series is a perfect example of the best kind of remake. The producers obviously examined the original series thoroughly and set out to play up the best elements of the series and rectify the weaknesses. As a result, the series boasts vastly superior animation that avoids the constant cycles and other crudities of Filmation's work. There is also wonderful writing with stories that are so well paced that each episode has the feel of a feature film with the amount of content they manage to pack in. The characters are formed with intricate detail and it allows for a truly compelling viewing experience. It is a pleasure to see a remake finally be everything that it should be.
ztonus I was surprised to learn that they were planning a new "He-Man" cartoon series. I'm a big fan of He-man, having grown up watching every episode on video as a kid. Thankfully, I had The Cartoon Network, so I could see this. Mainly, it's a good trip. I like that the animators paid tribute to the original cartoon while adding different elements. I loved the opening, how the narration was almost copied word for word until the explosion cracked me up! The new ideas surrounding He-Man and Prince Adam's identities worked well. Prince Adam's a kid (with Leonardo the Ninja Turtle's voice?), while He-Man's a grown buffed-up machine. Skeletor's even more scary of a villian (and he sounds almost the same) in this cartoon because they've added the glowing eyes and vampire canines. Orco's still there and I'm glad, even though he's sounds more different. Teela's the only problem with this series. While her hair looks cool, she's a kid now and not the hot captain of the guard from the original series. Oh, well..While old fans may not like this new version as much, I found it pretty entertaining for today's kids.
Nicholas J. Michalak I used to have a LARGE assortment of He-Man action figures. I even had Castle Greyskull! My dad made me give them away (along with my G.I. Joe's) to some charity of what not. I still hate him for that. Seeing that the series was coming back on Cartoon Network made me remember my childhood television favorites. I still have a few episodes of the original series on video tape, and I even have the He-Man & She-Ra Christmas Special (SPOILER WARNING: ***where Skeletor actually saves the day***). Anyway, the animation is truly superior (in most parts) the original series (I never saw any of the other He-Man series), and the plots are much more involved. I only have a few gripes. One, the transformation sequence for He-Man was a LOT better in the original series. It had more flash, I miss the heavy echo of He-Man's voice, and the music cue was just about as dramatic as a cartoon gets. Don't get me wrong, Joseph LoDuca is great as I LOVE the music for "THE EVIL DEAD" trilogy along with what he's done on the "HERCULES" & "XENA" T.V. series. Also, I think the design for Orko is a bit overdone. I mean, the hat's too big, he doesn't need a feather, and the belt kind of makes his shroud look like a dress.I love the fact that they've explored more of the origins here. Why Skeletor has a skull for a face, where He-Man's powers come from, and so on. Good to see King Randor as a more physical character (as seen in the Pilot episode), and I like that even the background characters have gotten more forefront time. It seems as if they've got a good production team for this show, and I'm so happy with Cartoon Network with "JUSTICE LEAGUE" & "TRANSFORMERS: ARMADA" (even if it is the least of the TF series). Now, all we need is a NEW "THUNDERCATS" series (or, at least, re-runs of the old series). Also, I'm glad with what they've done with the toyline. I haven't bought any of them yet, but it's great that they've re-issued some of the original action figures in a collector's set. It's truly a remarkable idea. Also, the new toys look fantasic! It's all a Grade-A job in all aspects of this revival. Even the live-action "MASTER OF THE UNIVERSE" film was released on DVD with Director's commentary the same year. It's the complete & total package. He-Man & the Masters of the Universe are back in all their glory! I hope it lives on for quite some time.-NJM
