This anime in my perspective as a writer, in my perspective is a masterpiece.
now now!, dont listen to the two persons in this review section who described this anime as "pure garbage", or "worst anime" clearly those two has no knowledge what the anime is trying to send or what the message of the anime is.the characters are two 12 year old kids who journey their way to the abyss.
the negative reviews below saying that these kids doesnt know where they are going is just pure ignorance, the story is in fact very progressive the caharacter knows exactly where to go and that is below the abyss, why they go there... reg(the boy) wants to know his past , he lost his memories, riko(the girl) received a message from her mom so she made her way there to know if her mother is still alive, they both know that when they enter the abyss there is no turning back and the accepted their fate, yes in some occasions that the girl was dumb we get it shes a kid and still learning, even though she knows what danger she will encounter she embarked on that journey to experience the place her self, this shows the bonding of the character on how they rely on each other, reg for hunting, transport, protections and comfort, riko is navigation, knowledge, food, basically survival... moving on...
i do hate the fact that people judge this based on its art style, yes it looks childish in some aspects but the reason to that is to counter most anime that does nothing but sexualize kids, this anime is trying to prevent that, the scene in ep 13 (SPOILER ALERT) where riko asked reg about his penis is nothing to sexualize about.. it shows pure innocence she doesnt know that if a boy sees a girl naked they get an erection, but shes not embarrassed at all since she only sees reg as a relic and not a human thats a mixture of innocence and ignorance yes they know amputation to stop the poison from spreading and killing and mercy killing, but it is the lack of discovery to sexuality that makes them innocent, theyre kids and nothing more, the scene in the first episode showing that riko was strung up naked, only shows that the orphanage is not easy on kids and it is punishment, the part isn't even like a "fan service" in some anime, it is there to show the viewers that she describes it as traumatizing, not because it is to sexualize it. again moving on damn my review is long but please bear with me, the anime is teaching us sacrifice, to move for ward, we must leave the things that weigh us down to move forward even if it is our limbs, or our friend in order to achieve what we need, the thing the those 2 negative reviews FAILED to understand
this anime shows us the worst and darkest reality of how humans can be,
this shows makes you think in the situations you can never imagine or some people describe it as "INTENSE" "DRAMATIC" "LOSS OF HOPE" "FINDING HOPE" that is why this is a masterpiece because of its unique story telling, scenery, and plot that is almost very uncommon.

You know where, part of the difference between adult content and kids content,is that in adult content, not everything is explicit.
There are some things that are in the background, not everything said outright, not everything is expressed the moment it is thought. This anime is shallow, it is surface level, **no subtlety**. The characters are annoying and uninspiring. I prayed to god that the producers would have enough balls for the corpsewhisperers to eat the main character outright in episodes 4-5. All the dialogues are mediocre to bad. Every scenes that the producers tried to make were awfully done. Instead of talking so much, why dont you give a stray look? Instead of emphasizing unnecessarily the (uninspiring) maliciousness of Ozen, they could have made it much more subtle and simpler, making the effect much bigger that way.The fact that it has some stray sparks of blood now and then does not make this anime for adults. The producers do not think any more of their viewers than being teens. Avoid at all costs.

This is several hours of my life I'm not getting back.
A childlike artstyle and annoying characters that tackle harsh questions is the foundation that keeps this mess together. This anime is clearly written by a man because all of the jokes (and there are way to many) get really old really fast.
The main character is an annoying stupid girl in constant need of rescue. Despite having studied The Abyss and knows all about it, she constantly ends up in danger such as getting kidnapped by corpsewhisperers and falling straight into the mouth of an enemy! I've never wanted a main character to die so much just so that this horrible stupid show would come to an end.
Not to mention that most of the episodes are repetitive and shows chunks upon chunks of the same clips that has already been seen. Proving that they really have no idea of where to go and make a solid story. And then the show ends on.. not even a cliffhanger, more like a small ledge that I'm willing to ignore and never go back to.I seriously hope it doesn't get a second season because people who like this crap does not deserve nice things.

You can tell there was a ton of effort put into this series. As someone who doesn't like the current trends in anime these days, I found massive enjoyment watching Made in Abyss. This might not make sense, but it feels really pure and new. I highly recommend just diving straight into this series without knowing much about it.
