Reviews

Robert D. Ruplenas I have fallen in love with this show by way of the cable reruns. It's wonderful in every way. The concept of the show is brilliant; a detective show in which the detective, although brilliant, is neither suave, brave, not debonair. He is truly a psychologically damaged person. And although his foibles and phobias are often played for laughs, the fact of his being destroyed by his wife's death is always a serious element of the show. The supporting players are excellent, particularly Ted Levine as Cpt. Stottlemeyer. The character of Randy is a bit gratuitously annoying but you can't have everything. The scriptwriting is some of the best around, with many subtle witticisms and some great cultural parody. And it is never straight out comedy; the tragic nature of Monk's mental affliction is always present, and the endings always have a gentle touch. The crime mysteries themselves are most often not the point of the show. They are merely the McGuffin - in Hitchcocks's phrase - on which to hang a drama about character relationships. Just a great, great show.
thenekassyni I love the show and watch the whole series when I have a lot of free time. But the writing is just bad in some of the episodes. This is especially true of the supporting cast to Monk himself. While Monk is well developed the others are buffoons, literally morons. Now, I'm not saying this because I don't like them because I do. But I cannot stand the bad script that they are given. This is more patronizing and absurd everyone around him lavishes and adores the the criminal even though Monk is never ever wrong. You would figure that after 200 cases with 100% success they would know better. But hey, maybe this is the comedy side of it. It's doesn't work for me. In fact, it makes me want to puke because it is so bad.It is worse than the Randy character that they have created. We know that he's intentionally an idiot and a kiss-ass but the issue above isn't and it's not believable. Well, you could say that the script and characters' worship has a purpose but it is a very bad part of the episodes used in. Imagine being one of these buffoons adoring every star and every famous person. Now imagine them not being around monk, how their life would have crumble down in an instant because of their sheer adoration for others vanity. In such cases I fast forward to the end to avoid all the fake set ups.
Davis P I remember the good ol' days when I would watch Monk live every week on USA, I waited all week to get that new episode on Friday night! Monk is a very well written comedy/cop csi type show. Tony Shaloub plays his character wonderfully here! He really embodies the character Adrian Monk! And Traylor Howard as Natalie Teager was really very enjoyable as his assistant. In the beginning, Monk has a different assistant, Sherona Flemming, whom I liked as well. All the characters in monk are very well constructed and entertaining! The episodes are full of great humor, cool who dunnit type mysteries, and guest appearances, like actress/comedian Sarah Silverman. Monk is a show that honestly never gets old, you can just sit down and have a big marathon of it, season by Season, 1 to 7 :) This show is highly recommended by me. I got the seasons on DVD just in case they ever stopped showing the reruns on USA and Cloo. I suggest you do the same! 10/10.
Syl Tony Shaloub deserved his Emmy award for playing the title character, Adrian Monk, in the series. Bitty Schram was perfect as Sharona Fleming, his nurse and sidekick. The late great Stanley Kamel was perfect as his understanding psychiatrist. Ted Levine was great as Stottlemyer for the San Francisco police department. Despite being set in San Francisco, California, they filmed the series in Canada. The first season had only twelve episodes where each and every one is perfectly done with great acting and writing. You have guest stars like WIllie Nelson, Garry Marshall, Tim Daly, Brooke Adams, Kevin Nealson, Adam Arkin, and others as well. The murder crime scenes aren't so gruesome but Monk always gets his man or woman in the end. The final episode in the first season included Tony's real life wife Brooke Adams; his former co-star Tim Daly from Wings; and Garry Marshall. The series is a bit quirky at times but entertaining if you're not annoyed by Monk's obsessive compulsive behavior.
