Rescue 911 is an informational reality-based television series that premiered on April 18, 1989 and ended on August 27, 1996. The series was hosted by William Shatner and featured reenactments of emergency situations that often involved calls to 9-1-1. Though never intended as a teaching tool, various viewers used the knowledge they obtained watching the show. Two specials, titled "100 Lives Saved" and "200 Lives Saved," were dedicated to these viewers who had written to CBS with their stories on how the knowledge they obtained watching the show allowed them to save the life of someone else. At least 350 lives have been saved as a result of what viewers learned from watching it. The show's popularity coincided with the widespread adoption of the 911 emergency system, replacing standalone police and fire numbers that would vary from municipality to municipality. The number is now universally understood in the United States and Canada to be the number dialed for emergency assistance nationwide. At its height, the show was adapted in 45 countries.

Brandon Keys From: "Brandon Michael Keys" This show may well have saved my own life and prevented me from dying cased by the drugs they putt me on for my ATTENTION DEFICIT DISORDER. I love Rescue 911 and in debt-ed to William Shatner for the rest of my life. "Thankyou" Rescue 911 and to William Shatner. I also remember being on stretchers in the ambulances at the times I had my seizures. I also wore head braces along with being loaded on to the ambulances. At the different times I had one of 2 of my seizures and the one grand Mal seizure cased by the Ritalin that I was taking for my A.D.D. ATTENTION DEFICIT DISORDER. This show helped prepared my family for these emergencies "ThankYou" "Rescue 911" I am 23 years old now butt it happened over 12 or 13 years ago.
Moonie_88 I haven't really seen this show a very long time. I remember watching it on the Family channel which is now ABC Family, and then it moved on to CBS. I remember the part where a daughter and a father go on some picnic and when they were on the road. They were driving in some red two-door car, and then a dump truck fell on them! And all the sand covered the car. The next one I remembered is when the litte girl ask her mom if she could bathe her little brother and her mom said no but she did it anyway. The little girl said she was testing to see if the water was hot or cold. She felt the cold water and decided to turn it all the way to hot! Then her little brother said it was too hot and his skin started to melt. Her mother came in the bathroom and just completely freak out. And the next thing I remember is when those kids where in the basement with their father. Their father was looking at this heater and then light up a match, and then it just EXPLODES. The two children were badly burn that they had no hair and had to wear like protection on their bodies. I'm telling you. This is one scary show!
actionpro This show was what we in the industry term as Compelling TV. It was an addictive show that re-enacted all sorts of horrible and gruesome events that leaded up to an actual call to 911. The best part of the show was that it was broken up into segments that were, in effect, 15 minute scoldings for stupid behavior. For instance, a man mishandles a .357 magnum and shoots his friend through the back while they are out in the woods, away from all civilization (and hospitals). Or, 2 girls are playing in a drainage ditch (which is illegal and very dangerous) when it suddenly fills with water and they are swept away. How about the time that some youngsters decided to outrun a train and didn't quite make it. Who could forget the kid who stuck his tongue to the frozen peas. We learned that a cup of water would remedy that situation. (That kid denied the whole incident by saying he was licking his lips because he was so hungry and then his tongue got stuck. Yeah right! Just admit it-your predicament educated the entire country and the ensuing remedy was even referenced in Dumb and Dumber). Then there was the time that a man was cleaning his pool and hit the strainer against a power line, resulting in cardiac arrest. In effect, America learned that rules are made for a reason and that warning labels should always be read; if not, disastrous consequences might ensue. Also, America learned that if an accident did occur, brave men and women would drop everything and risk their lives to save you. It doesn't matter if you deserve it or if it is your fault-help is always on the way.
sparhawk-7 This was the harbinger of reality "emergency" shows that were to follow it such as the multitude that the TLC/Discovery/Discovery Health trifecta show. Looking back at repeats shown on Discovery Health, it was fairly hokey. Nearly all the "emergencies" shown were re-enacted with usually little to no real actual footage, and you can't help but chuckle at reenacters that really hammed it up sometimes. Immensely popular show in its early-90's prime though. The real-footage shows nowadays really make Rescue 911 look very, very dated now, and the reenactments jokably hollow and unrepresentative, but it's still good for kicks. Also, you can see William Shatner in what had to be a very low point in his acting career, after the disaster of Star Trek V. Going from Star Trek legend to no-name generic hosting job? Eegah.
