dnitzer-465-412648 The show is at its best when the characters have to face the consequences of their asinine behavior, or trauma of on-the-job events. Unfortunately that doesn't happen often enough. The comedy is sometimes on-point, but more often it is sophomoric and cheap, too easy and obvious; it seems the writers don't know what to do. The comedy becomes filler, instead of growing out of the situation or the characters; the equivalent of a cartoon pie fight. Outrageous plots overrule character development. When the show is good, it is very good, but you have to sit through long stretches where characters are not believable, and plots are set up to deliver a joke. With few exceptions, the characters rarely learn; they seem stuck in sixth grade. Once in a while someone shows some depth, but that depth rarely sticks; by the next episode they are back in sixth grade mode. I would not want to hang out with these people.
bjarias Through the entire 93 episodes Denis Leary's character is a hard one to like. Continually argumentative, self-centered and destructive to himself and those around him, it would only be as a television character that anyone would have any long term interest in him (this might be said for several of the characters in the show). And without Andrea Roth.. bit.ly/13jVfjP .. in her role as a calming, entrancing, counterbalance, it most likely would not have been a seven season series. One big positive.. the series actually had a planned ending... many programs do not, they just leave the viewers annoyingly hanging, as the shows get slipshod cancelled by the networks.
ihaveshair I was really looking forward to the return of new episodes, because I love the show and have watched it from day one. I know how near and dear the show is to Denis Leary and Peter Tolan, and you can really see that in every episode. However, that being said, I will admit that some of Rescue Me was hard to watch, because it seemed to venture off of what the shows origins were about. The new season, I know only 2 shows into, is feeling the same way to me. I almost stopped watching the first episode when Janet and Shelia were giggling like fools, but I thought. "this must be going somewhere". Well, I was wrong, because the next episode showed them in the same light, but now they added Colleen and Katie as crying and being annoying as well. Its a GREAT show , but it needs to focus on the fire house and the brave, wonderful, complex firemen of NYC that was the intent of the show. That being said, I will watch, if not only as a homage to the firemen of NYC, but also to the intent behind the show.
Howlin Wolf I thought that the first instalment of the final hybrid seasons was watchable - I've seen all 6 seasons up until the time of writing and never thought anything less than that. The comedy, acting and the camaraderie of the guys in the firehouse is all preserved into its last lap, but the show just doesn't have the same great mix of humour and drama anymore. The killing off of big characters and cliffhangers that are just totally dropped in time for the start of the next season completely undermines any tension or continuity. This choppy feeling of flow is a problem from Season Four onwards.Out of respect for the characters and the guys who perform them superbly, I'm still happy to keep watching though. By having the ending roughly coincide with the 10th anniversary of 9/11, they are picking the perfect time to bow out.
