Reviews

TheLittleSongbird I love animation and have done for goodness knows how long, and I loved The Mask starring Jim Carrey. This is a true gem of a show, every bit as good and fun as the movie, and one of the best cartoon shows of the 90s alongside Peter Pan and the Pirates, Animaniacs, Pinky and the Brain, Tiny Toon Adventures, Darkwing Duck, Talespin and The Little Mermaid. The animation has so much vibrancy and colour, and The Mask has one of the coolest intros of any animated show. The story lines are both exciting and intriguing, with my favourites being Sister of the Mask, Bride of Pretorious, To Bee or Not to Bee and the Mask and Ace Ventura crossover, and I was always impressed at how fresh and witty, as well as intelligent, the writing was.I also can't get enough of the slapstick humour, there is plenty of it and all of it works. Of the shows of my childhood I revisited recently The Mask was the one that stood out to me as the funniest. The characters are wonderful, Stanley Ipkiss/The Mask never fails to crack me up with his disguises, his fast-paced antics and his exclamations of "wedgie", Milo is ever so cute and Doyle and Kellaway are such a contrasting and entertaining duo.As the villains, they are all interesting and well developed. I liked Mayor Tilton, Stinger, Lonnie the Shark and Gorgonzola, but my favourite has to be Pretorious, my love for Tim Curry is a big part of why and he doesn't disappoint here. Can't complain about the voice acting either, to say that Rob Paulsen is amazing is an understatement, he had big shoes to fill and he more than makes the character his own, easily one of my favourite voice overs of his. Jim Cummings, Neil Ross, Cree Summer, Tim Curry et al are equally terrific and they are helped hugely by the writing and how the characters are written.Overall, a 90s gem and perfect to go with the movie. If I were you though, I would avoid Son of the Mask, I consider it not just one of the worst sequels ever but also one of the worst movies ever. 10/10 for this series that said. Bethany Cox
hedningara Considering the pile of crap that infests CN in the present, this series really stood out during the time it released (I'm talking about a really long time ago) and was quite innovative in many ways. It was honestly very good. It was quite surprisingly extremely funny using its own unique style of humor. No it is no where nearly as good as the movie itself, which is quite strange, although the movie itself would be something very difficult to live up to and match using animation. It did sometimes almost border on adult themes like the movie but is mostly kids stuff. Very very entertaining for its time although I don't know how viable it would be today as I have'nt really watched it years?
Carycomic *Might be some spoilers* That's why I'm contributing to the index of comments on this cartoon series now. Because, when the sequel does hit theaters, Ted Turner will probably buy the telecast rights for Cartoon Network. Not to mention, the video/DVD distribution rights! Which means, this branch of IMDB will then be crowded like a "New Yawk" subway at rush hour! In any event, I found the cartoon series to be just as hilarious as the movie. There was one episode that poked some good-natured fun at WB's "Animaniacs" (where Rob Paulsen was simultaneously employed, back then). Another episode had the Mask finding himself constantly out-tricked by a Zatanna-type magician-cum-jewel-thief named "Davida Steelmine!" But, the most suspenseful episodes had to be the run-ins with Dr. Pretorious and his pet cyborg Walter. Tim Curry always does great villain-voices, and the not-so-good doctor tops my personal list of them. One final note: I once wrote to the PR department of the original movie's production company, asking them if there would ever be a sequel. They said, "yes," and estimated _1998_ as the release date! So, guys, if you're reading this? PLEASE, STICK A LITTLE CLOSER TO THE NEW ESTIMATE! OK? Thanks.
TheMan3051 After the enormous success of The Mask it seemed obvious that a sequel would be in the works. But as we all know we never got that sequel. Instead we got something better! An animated series which is faithful to the movies and "maybe" the comics. I've never read the comics but I suppose. Anyhow, the plots were amazing and the characters and villians were greatly developed. This was truly a fun show. It was great. And Rob Paulsen (Pink & the Brain) did a great voice over! And in my opinion after seeing this great show there really is no need for a sequel. I wouldn't mind one but there is no need.
