Reviews

m-ozfirat Most of the television programmes of the 1980s were interested only in marketing toys ( though He-Man was good in its own right) this series captivated young audiences with a story line out of the ordinary The story centres on three young children Esteban, Zia and Tao the former two through their families have necklaces that lead to the Cities of Gold or El Dorado as its commonly called. This intrigues a Spanish Maverick called Mendoza who alongside other greedy and competing Europeans use the children for there own purposes in their adventures in South America. Mendoza however warms to the children and encounters the great civilisations and mysteries of South America some of them so remote or lost to the mysteries of time not known to other Europeans combined with mystic and intrigue making the series dynamic with great music and animation. The minor faults about the series in my opinion is that I think Zia and Esteban should of got together and an adaption of this South American odyssey to the source from where it came The King's Fifth adding more of a colonialist element between Europeans and natives expressed with Esteban and Zia's relationship.
online-124 This is not only entertaining but educational as well without the kids knowing! The cartoon was very entertaining and right at the end contained a 3 minute mini documentary of what you just saw of the real facts about their travels.Kids today only see random crap, but back in the 70's and 80's animations were fantastic. I saw this on our ABC on the afternoon after school and was good then and better now!If you have kids you should get a copy!Definitely worth watching and great to FINALLY see it on DVD!!
mirosuionitsaki2 Today, I have just gotten a hold of all the episodes of Taiyô no ko Esteban from a friend. He has told me that he has seen this show when he was a child and he is glad that he has taped them. I watched two episodes so far and going to watch the third one. It is a very exciting and interesting show. Usually, I have no interest to watch shows or read books about the sea, the desert, and life in the 1500s but this is an exception. Also, it's anime so it will make this show a little better than the greatness it already is. Children from the 1980s who has watched this series most likely has thought of this show as inspirational to them. Other than Teenage Mutant turtles which was around during that time and other shows that wouldn't encourage children to do good. Also, I thought that the characters were well designed and the plot is well written. It is quite a shock when I heard from a review that Saban, the company that owned the American rights to it lost the episodes to a fire which will cause Nickelodeon to never air it again. Saban should get a hold of new episodes or get one from friends who have recorded it on VHS and convert them to whatever format they want to have Nickelodeon or another television channel air it again. The children of today need this show! It's just too good. As for others who were lucky enough to already seen it or others who got a hold of it just recently to remember the episodes so clearly, I have a message for you.Keep the spirit of the Mysterious Cities of Gold in your heart. Please.
DrLex This is one of those TV series that has "quality" written all over it. I remember immediately being hooked on as a kid from the moment I saw the intro for the first time. This intro on itself is a nice example of how well this series was conceived. It starts out with a spectacular descent from outer space towards the ruin of a Maya temple and further down to the core of Earth, accompanied by a voice which tells of an amazing mystery. Then the catchy theme song starts, while we get a preview of the main characters and some key elements of the story, some of which would only appear after a dozen episodes. In short, this animated series has excellent animation, excellent voice acting, an excellent musical score, and an excellent story based on a historical setting but with lots of fantasy elements that will stir the interest of any child. I had probably never developed the same interest in history if I hadn't watched this series. Moreover, every episode was originally accompanied by a short documentary which connected some of the (semi-)fictional events or sites in the story to real-world counterparts. Unfortunately these documentaries were not aired in every country. The series originated from a French-Japanese cooperation, a concept that would produce several other high-quality animated series around the same time period. It appears that the Japanese, French and English versions were produced by the same quality standards, because they all are top-notch. It's a shame that there currently is no official DVD release of the English version. The only way to get it, is to look for unofficial releases, reconstructed from the video stream of the official French release and audio tracks from old VCR recordings. Apparently it's unclear who owns the rights to the English master tapes. Although not widely known, this series is a monument in TV history and deserves a better treatment.
