benjaminburt Spectacular Spider-man may just be the best Spider-man cartoon known to man. Unfortunately, it doesn't have a ton of competition in this regard, seeing as the 1960s version is incredibly dated, like 4 of them didn't even last more than 2 seasons, and though the 90s version is a classical retelling that brought most of the Spidey mythos to life, it suffered from censorship and childish dialogue. Still, Spectacular Spider-man offers compelling characters, good plot- lines, exciting action, and is an all-around good animated series. I would recommend it to any Spider-man fan. There is just one thing I have trouble getting over. I don't believe this show could ever be 'the definitive Spider-man show' not because of its short length or its cliffhanger cancellation, or because I'm a nostalgia nut that says the original has to be better. The thing I dislike most about this series is the atrociously juvenile character design and animation style. I felt it didn't gel right with the traditional comic-book style I was so used to. I understand that the character design was a deliberate choice, and it definitely set the show apart from its colleagues. But how can a show claim to be the definitive adaptation of a source material if it looks barely like the source material? The only other complaint I had was that some of the villain voice- actors were very disappointing, especially Jeff Bennett as Shocker and John DiMaggio as Sandman. Though voice-acting veterans, I felt like DiMaggio never found a real identity for his character, and Bennett gave a dull, lifeless "I'ma cowboy" performance. Venom and Doc Oc also lacked any gravitas in their voice acting. Beyond these, the voice acting ranges from passable to excellent. All of the non-villain characters give, almost without exception, exceptional voice performance. This show was definitely a good one, and I hold out hope the creators and the owners would bring the show back for a full 5-season run.
Jesper Brun It really is a shame we only got two seasons. Every episode left me wanting to see more, because all the good stuff was in it: engaging voice actors, well developed versions of the characters, great action scenes etc. I always say that a good story triumphs visuals, but the animation in the 1994 series was so much more dynamic. The style of Saturday morning cartoon series is a downgrade, but that is the only issue I have with this rendition of our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. Watch it. You won't regret it.
patrickmmc I have read all 26 reviews here and I am wondering what these people are thinking and in fact, I'm wondering too what the producers of this cheesy product where thinking. Ask me, I have no doubt as to why the program was canceled. The drawing and animation are absolutely horrible and appear to be designed by someone in elementary school for kindergarteners. The drawing and animation in the 60's cartoon, when it was all done by hand, are exceedingly better than this crap. The 90's cartoon series definitely blows this away. Many of the reviews here state opinions of this show being better than any others ever produced. How anyone who is an adult or nearing adulthood could think that this tripe is better is beyond me. It's crap, plain and simple.
pkmnlvr My goodness. Talk about a perfect show. This series completely blew me away, and it's a real shame that it is has been cancelled on account of the infamous Ultimate Spider-man cartoon. The Spectacular Spider-man was had absolutely no dull moments and I feel it really captured what it would have been like for a high school teenager to get super powers. Hilariously, Peter Parker falls in love with any girl that he looks at for too long... just as any teenage boy would. I repeat, it is such a shame (and I cannot stress this enough!) that this show was cancelled. Alas, cruel fate, all good things must come to an end. And though I am disappointed that this masterpiece had a short 2-season run, I am glad to have experienced it. I have bought both seasons on iTunes and will continue to watch and share such great quality entertainment. And as I sip my drink, once again with that whimsical feeling that the show will one day return, I shed a tear for what was lost and what will never be.
