alexanderdavies-99382 Rod Serling's masterpiece of "The Twilight Zone" was a television show of such high standards, that any attempt to update the show was going to be rather a challenge. This 1980s version, in spite of having honourable intentions, is not a particularly good rendition. The main problem, is that the insight, creativity and guidance that Rod Serling provided for the original series, is sorely lacking here. In addition, his team of right hand men - Richard Matheson, Charles Beaumont, George Clayton Johnson amongst others, are also greatly missed. There are some talented writers from the 1980s series but their stories just don't work for me. A lot of the episodes are half- baked in their plots and mostly boring and uninspired. The look of the series is so dated by today's standards and that doesn't help. One or two stories were mildly diverting, especially the one with Danny Kaye. At least that story contained a glimmer of the old magic. The opening credit sequence shows a blurred but definite image of Rod Serling, which is only right. After all, "The Twilight Zone" wouldn't have existed in the first place without him. I shall stick with the original series, it is the ONLY "Twilight Zone."
Cristi_Ciopron What is a philosophical short—story? Does it still keep a core of thought? Of philosophical thought, that is? Does this thought still matter—or it is only the originality, charm and fun of the execution and wit that we are after? Does the philosophical premise still count? Is it of any interest, for such a story to be a success ?Is this core of thought and speculation important in itself, or only a pretext, interesting only insofar it generates something other—a fable, a parable, an allegory, a symbolical tale?Is the philosophy left outside—and only the execution and style matters? Is it thought? Is it art, i.e. "only" form, style? Borges confessed that thought, even metaphysical thought, can be put into stories—into philosophical short—stories. That there is in them a meaning and a thought. (Borges liked allegories, symbols, keys, and I think he considered, like the much greater Chesterton before him, that 'Jekyll' has a meaning, that it is allegorical, symbolical …). The only meaning of art is artistry itself? Can art convey metaphysical meanings, deep truths, a real and incisive thought (that is, beyond the matters of art and representation) ?What is to be admired? Only the skill of creating shapes and charms? Is it a deeper meaning to be conveyed? Has philosophical art any meaning? The formalists ,like Nabokov and Zarifopol, will answer no—the object of art is indifferent ,the only meaning is the implicit artistry; the _phenomenologist writers like Camil Petrescu and Paleologu will answer—in a certain sense, yes (more often the art is philosophical when it intends to be truly artistic; the fidelity to the real, not the parable, symbol, allegory , is the right approach; a philosophical notion as such would betray and damage the art and the truthfulness ); the allegorical—minded, like Chesterton and his partial follower and admirer Borges will utter an yes. Tournier would be of the same opinion, too, as he explicitly developed his ideas of narration. Is it anything to be admired, beyond or aside the formal achievement? Do ideas generate emotions? Are conceptions heart—warming? As an (abstract) philosophical program, thought can spoil the art. But given as an artistic intuition? And does thought subsist as such, when it is transformed into artistic intuition? Does it still have any existence as such, as thought? Is it 'only' vision, or thought subsists ? The so—termed First revival of the Twilight Zone, seen by me when I was 11 yrs. (that is,some 6—7 yrs. after its first episodes began being aired) may help us to answer these questions.
Mythicalreviewer I'm glad I never watched this show when it came out.I just wondered why it lasted 4 years. It reminds me of the terrible 80's with fake people, fake clothes, and fake music. How did I ever survive growing up in this era? The acting in the majority of episodes I have watched are forced. This makes for very boring shows. The plot lines are not very interesting as the old Twilight Zone shows. The old show inspired the imagination and made one look forward to the next show. Stick with the old Twilight Zone shows and spare yourself the pain of watching garbage.
nlstock Here's hoping that the 1985 and 1986 versions of The Twilight Zone will one day be released on DVD as it was an outstanding series with well written episodes. The beginning titles have a half-second animation of Rod Serling in them as a salute to the originator of the series. The episode "Nightcrawlers" was directed by William Freidkin and is brilliant. One episode called "Shatterday" features the TV debut of Bruce Willis. There is also a small budget third season which was made after cancellation to make up the numbers for syndication, but it's budget was small and apart from one good episode, where a man is possessed by what looks like Christ,it is a poor third season. But the first two seasons are brilliant.
