Reviews

c-computerkid About a year ago, I vaguely remembered a Disney cartoon called "The Weekenders" from around 2000/2001, and I decided to do a little research on it. I'm so glad I did! "The Weekenders" chronicles the weekends of four average kids: Tino (Jason Marsden), Carver (Phil LaMarr), Lor (Grey DeLisle), and Tish (Kath Soucie). On paper, it does sound like a rather dull show. But what sets this show apart is its attention to the details. Many cartoons base their humor on slapstick rather than clever writing. The quality of the "The Weekenders" writing, however, is such that you could actually imagine it being a live-action sitcom. Though it is supposedly a "kids' show," many jokes will fly over kids' heads. There are also some lines that are simply hilarious and unexpected.Stellar voice acting adds to the attractiveness of "The Weekenders." Jason Marsden, famous for playing minor and semi-regular roles in sitcoms, voices the neurotic Tino. Phil LaMarr (the voice of Samurai Jack and Wilt from Foster's) plays fashion-obsessed Carver. Ubiquitous voice actress Grey DeLisle portrays Lor, the "jock," and Kath Soucie rounds out the bunch as the "brain," Tish. Each of the characters is very realistic and you can see yourself and others in them, much like Charles Schulz's "Peanuts." "The Weekenders" also employs unique techniques for an animated series. Often, the characters make asides to the audience (the screen fades to gray while only that character speaks). Also, running gags such as the disastrous off-screen exploits of Chloe Montez reward fans who watched the show from the beginning. Finally, like "As Told by Ginger" the characters actually change clothes when the days change in the show.Overall, consistently witty writing, strong voice acting, and unique techniques make "The Weekenders" very fun to watch. It's truly a shame this show didn't have a long run like some other animated series; it certainly had the workings to do so.
Cynicalik The Weekenders is pretty much about 4 best friends living for the weekend. Doug Langdale is a genius for creating this great cartoon for Disney. It is simply the best Disney cartoon series has came out with in a long time. It's a shame that Disney discontinued it late in 2001. They didn't even have a chance to make merchandise for this show.At first, I thought this was an awful cartoon when I saw it in 2000. I was about 15 or 16 at the time and I just thought it was really lame. A couple of years later, I watched it again. I didn't know it at the time, but ABC was going to pull the show off their lineup of shows. I would of never seen this show again if I never got satellite. I did get satellite and I found the channel it was on.This is probably the most realistic cartoon of all time, in my opinion. The episodes deal with some things that kids can relate to. Even though I wasn't really a kid after I watched it, I thought it was a funny cartoon. I sort of related to some of the things that were on the episodes when I was a kid.Well, it's really too bad that this cartoon didn't make it that far. They never even made that much off this cartoon. Oh well, I guess kids these days want to watch stupid mindless cartoons like Yu-Gi-Oh. I remember it beat Pokemon in the ratings at one point. Anyway, this cartoon is possibly the best cartoon of all time. For those who want to compare this to Recess, you can't really compare them together. Yes, there may be some similarities, but the Weekenders is the better cartoon.
bumble472 Before I talk about the show, I would just like to say to whoevercalled Tino a WASP that he is most certainly NOT WASPy at all. Also, for all of you who are comparing The Weekenders to Recess, this show is far better. Recess is, even though the characters arefunny and clever, an idiotic show where stupid TJ always saves theday. In The Weekenders, all of them solve the problem and thecharacters are equally clever and funny. Although the show is a tadstereotypical, it is still extremely enjoyable and will most certainlymake you laugh out loud. The theme song and beginning creditsare also very fun. All in all, this show is AWESOME and you shouldmost certainly watch it if you have cable. It is now on Monday-Fridayafternoons nestled between two ridiculously stupid shows (Lloydin Space and Disney's House of Mouse) at 3:00 Eastern Time onthe Disney Channel. It's so much fun for adults and kids alike andshould not be missed under any circumstances! I especially lovehow Tino's mom has the ability to analize everything, how the pizzaparlor is always changing names and themes, how there isalways a strange and disgusting food to be tasted at theanthropoligy museum, and the narrations by usually Tino butsometimes by others. Even though it can be corny at the end, thisshow is superb. As Tino would say, Later Days!
Victor Field Recently, TV cartoons have been trying to get more realistic grounding, an approach I'm not too happy with. Trying to take a more mature approach to action-adventure is one thing, but animation should try to present things not regularly seen in real life; they should take advantage of their status as cartoons (which is one of the reasons why "King of the Hill" has never done anything for me; unlike the hilarious and much underrated "Family Guy," it would lose nothing by being made in live-action)."The Weekenders," like fellow Disney cartoon "Pepper Ann," displays the weaknesses and strengths of this approach. Set in a beachside city and following the weekend exploits of four friends (Tino our "host," Carver, Lor and Tish), it's a long way from Hanna-Barbera's 1970s efforts but also tends to bring on its morals for that episode's stories (with a few exceptions like the show where Tino's mum meets a new man, most instalments contain two adventures) with the mentality of the worst kind of sickly family show, though admittedly without the sledgehammer effect of Filmation's shows. Tino's habit of doing an equivalent of Jerry Springer's Final Thought at the end of each story is also about as welcome and as necessary as an enema with an icepick, and the show also flirts with stereotyping even when it tries not to, such as with the running gag about the museum having foods of all nations. But (and here come the strengths) the show's clear good intentions ultimately don't get in the way of a desire to entertain; the four main characters are a lot more likeable than many of their liveaction counterparts (although the episode where they contrasted their real lives with the ones on a "Dawson's Creek"-type show seemed a bit self-important, Lor and company really are better value than Pacey et al), and the scripts are effective more often than not, which is to be expected given the involvement of "Earthworm Jim"'s Doug Langdale; extra stars for the other running gag about the pizza parlour that changes its theme each episode, and for a terrific theme song by Roger Neill and Wayne Brady. And any cartoon where Jennifer Love Hewitt makes a guest appearance is fine by me (it's not often someone does something like this on a cartoon that isn't "The Simpsons").Later days!
