Jeff's five sons volunteer to operate as the pilots and field agents, as well "Brain" who acts as the teams engineer. In addition, Jeff's friend, Kyrano and his daughter Tanusha aka Kayo (based on the original series Tin-Tin character) agree to be the support staff. nikarkham I loved Thunderbirds as a child and this new series which I watch each week with my three young sons is the perfect representation of the original ideas for a new era. There are homages to the past aplenty while giving us some new surprises... The Thunderbirds craft all launching together at the end of the series was such a buzz that the boys and their friends and cousins watch it repeatedly. Having such a strong female role on the team is important too - they admire Kayo and quite rightly so. Absolutely fantastic production all round (including the music, which my youngest son sings at full volume!) - sets, cartoon CGI, most of the plotting, voice acting... All high quality and a fitting successor to one of the most phenomenal children's shows of last century.
Botany Downs I love this show!! I've only seen re-runs of the original in the 80's when I was in junior high. I enjoyed it immensely especially Scott & Thunderbird 1 (my favorite). Now in my 30's I'm in love all over again. This time it's Virgil & Thunderbird 2 & of course Scott. The CGI is superb & the models are a nice touch. I hope fans of the original will give this a chance & by what I've been reading it seems a lot are. However I must agree that the show is too fast paced which makes it seem over before I have had the chance to digest it. Also it should be at least an hour instead of the 22 or so minutes it currently is. Overall they have stayed true to the original as much as they could. The voices are very nice especially David Menkin & Rasmus Hardiker. All in all I will be watching every episode @6pm then again @7pm on 2+1 then every day on TVNZ OnDemand. There's no doubt about it I'm hooked.
chazview If I hadn't watched the original marionette version of this series as a kid, I probably wouldn't be watching it now ;-) They've done an excellent job of meshing the look of the original series with modern animation. About the only thing that could be improved on in that regard would be the characters walking -- they all look like they have a big stick in an awkward bodily location that is inhibiting a more natural stride.Story-wise, I'd have preferred it if the plots could have matured along with the animation, while still keeping it kid-friendly. A nice change would have been a season-long story arc, maybe 8-10 episodes as opposed to quick little 20-minute vignettes. Though if you're looking for something to set a small toddler in front of for 20 minutes to yourself, the search is over. Mom and dad can pretend to watch while they check Facebook on their smartphones. After all these years, there are a couple areas in which this story could definitely use some improvement: racial and opposite sex inclusion. An all-caucasian international rescue team, and all-male. There's one tech-support guy from India, but he's always in-the-office and for some odd reason they've handicapped him with a cartoonish speech impediment. There's a sister who'd appears as an infrequent afterthought, and grandma with terrible cooking skills. Lady Penelope is still around, and still communicating with the white-male rescue force with her mirrored clamshell makeup compact, with a chauffeur -- another character from India, but without a stutter.White men rescuing black people is an oddly common theme of the series, ideally the international rescue force would have been truly international. Seems like even though the characters are no longer controlled with wires, white people are still pulling the strings.Regardless of the lackluster storytelling, the animation is unique, imaginative and obviously includes a well planned effort to include inspiration from the original series.
simonpcpearson Having grown up with vivid memories of repeat broadcasts the original Thunderbirds series, I am fully aware that I am too old to be the target audience for this new series, but I must confess that I don't much care for the new version. The casting is unmemorable- apart from the absolutely awful new Lady Penelope voiced by Rosamund Pike. Pike seems utterly bored and makes no attempt to invest the character with any personality or life. The music is mediocre, and it speaks volumes when the use of a piece of music from the 60s version is the highlight of one of the new episodes.Effects are passable, although the combination of CGI with occasional bits of modelwork seems a little clunky. I do like the design of the slightly reworked Thunderbirds vehicles. Not all changes seem so well thought. Brains has now changed race for no discernible reason. The short running time is a demerit for the new series. Plots are too linear, too simplistic. There is little characterisation.Sadly the tension and drama that the old Thunderbirds sometimes captured is completely absent from the new version.
