MisterWhiplash I wish Admission had been better as a movie. By this I mean it has the stuff to be really challenging and edgy as a dramedy. But Weitz, when he goes for the comedic, just lets everyone down (and Michael Sheen, how do you mess up that casting, or is it just the writing). But I liked the meat of the dramatic bones, and Fey actually shows she could be great in a more dramatic role... except in here she still gets saddled with the same Liz Lemon bits as we've seen her do.And I love Liz Lemon (Tina Fey), but any of her quirky/neurotic bits here are just too much after a while (sand for Lily Tomlin, who goes too quickly from being an over-the-top caricature of feminist aggression to a, uh, normal person I guess, which is fine cause she's good at it). So, in short, really good acting, some fantastic scenes set among the college admissions game of hard-knocks, but it's also uneven.Alexander Payne kept coming to mind as a director who could have turned this into something truly wonderful; in this case it's more like Election-lite.
FlashCallahan Admissions officer Portia is caught off-guard when she makes a visit to an alternative high school overseen by John Pressman. He has come to the conclusion that Jeremiah, his most gifted student, might well be the son that Portia gave up for adoption. Portia finds herself bending the rules for Jeremiah, putting at risk the life she thought she always wanted, but in the process finding a surprising and exhilarating life and she never dreamt of.....A film starring Fey and Rudd, would expected to be a funny, not too serious time to be had at the cinema, and from the one sheet, and the trailer, you would be forgiven if you thought you would get an Apatow light style comedy. Now while it's by no means a bad film, it's a pretty dark and at times, quite a depressing film to watch.Fey plays the woman who has literally everything go wrong for her that could possibly go wrong for her in the context of the narrative, and although it's common for this to happen in a romantic comedy to begin with, after a while, it makes for a pretty depressing character.Rudd plays the same character that makes him so likable, and here, he's on autopilot, but fine. The funniest parts of the film are the recurring joke featuring Sheen thinking that Fey is upset because he has dumped her, the comedy old man with the funny accent, and Lily Tomlin as the token special guest star. It's nothing new, but it passes the time, but it is clear to see why it bombed so badly.
kosmasp I love Tina Fey and Paul Rudd never gets old either (literally and metaphorically). The movie itself has quite a few flaws though. Never sure if it is a comedy or a drama. Walking that line was never going to be easy and it stumbles more than a few times. Tina and Paul do their best to keep it on tracks. The kid actors are pretty decent, but don't have much to go through in their arks. Of course the movie is about lost love and about family in general. But even those things are not mixed in the right mixture. There is either too much of something or too little of another thing. A shame that the talent and the massive effort on Tinas part does not really get the movie it would deserve.
Suzy Q I thought the movie was more of a romantic drama than a romantic comedy. My husband & I felt this movie was a story about a woman's awakening. Portia thought she had the life she always wanted, but she was confronted with her past & her perfect life started unraveling. However, as she faced reality, she discovered a new life that was richer & fuller than the life she had known.I liked how this story showed that Portia's awakening was a messy process because sometimes it is. I liked Portia & John's characters and how they both grew as people. I thought the cast did a great job!
