Reviews

kennyli Hong Kong itself is the 3rd character in this moving and intimate story, as it gives the rich foundation and backdrop for these two characters to ignite and fall in love with one another. Believable and authentically portrayed.I don't understand the strong negative reviews, particularly those that seem to be scoring it against a criteria not relevant to this film. I make no comparison or judgment against other films in scoring this, but simply on merit and based on what I experience of this film... which is a great appreciation for the work, feeling, and authenticity that all involved in this film must have given to produce such a personable film.
ReganRebecca In 1995 Richard Linklater released Before Sunrise, a romantic film about two young people who meet abruptly in Europe and over the course of an evening fall in love as they walk and talk. The magic of the film is in its very simplicity, bare as it is of special effects or overly dramatic plotting. It's spurred a generation of imitators that all keep trying to capture the magic and the chemistry of that movie and unfortunately most can't survive the comparison to that wonderful film. Already Tomorrow in Hong Kong is a movie made in the wake of Before Sunrise. Though the details of the people and the setting are different this is ultimately a walking and talking and falling in love movie. Ruby (Jamie Chung) is an American of Chinese descent who is planning to meet her friends for a drink but who can't locate the bar on her gps-less phone. Overhearing her dilemma, Josh (Bryan Greenberg), a white American expat, offers to walk her to her location. Over the course of their walk a connection sparks between them though when they arrive at their location Josh reveals something which sends Ruby into a rage and the two part on bad terms, only to be reunited completely by accident a year later when they meet on a ferry. Movies like this always rest on the strength of the characters and the chemistry of the actors and sadly both are really lacking here. Ruby, and Josh in particular, are not that interesting. Also, despite that the fact that the actors were engaged at the time of filming, they bizarrely lack chemistry. Ruby seems (rightly) defensive and sharp tongued a lot of the time, which makes sense since Josh is a complete stranger and she's in a foreign country, but on the flip side it's confusing why Josh would keep making pains to try to get to know her when, at least initially, she isn't interesting. Emily Ting shows promise as a director, but I can't help wishing she had chosen a more original plot that wouldn't suffer comparisons to a movie that has been so lauded and is held so dear for so many.
shezi89 How far would you allow your connection with one person to alter your life? I found this movie very refreshing in this day, from a long line of cheesy romance wanna be movies, this one is set apart and definitely worth the watch.I have watched it twice in one day and feeling refreshed with each watch, something about the story that sparks at realism, yeah the acting is not the best, the chemistry not that great but the movie has an undertone of something for those in relationships to really think about in regards to how they allow themselves to be accessed by other and the ultimate question of are you content in your relationship?
Zkot Pen I'm always up for a romantic comedy that rates 6.5 on IMDb, if I feel the topic is relevant, which is how I managed to suffer Already Tomorrow in Hong Kong to the end. Unfortunately, the problems with this film are fundamental and irremediable:1. Cinematography. Was this shot with iPhone? Angles, composition, depth of field, all demonstrate a complete lack of aesthetics, sullying the beauty of Hong Kong that lie right before it in practically every scene. Two points serve to illustrate: (1) Before the first scene even begins, the blurry look with colored bokeh shapes -- I knew I should have turned it off! (2) When they're standing in front of the harbor, talking about the beauty of the sea line -- it looks atrocious, blurred out in the background. Multiply similar observations by every scene.2. Dialog. Pure cliché. I wanted to be engaged in this interesting story line -- but we're looking at pure cheesy dialog from the 20th century -- old and moldy.3. Soundtrack. Right on par with cinematography and dialog: Uninspired cliché. Poor music, and badly edited.Do what I should have done: Don't even bother with Already Tomorrow in Hong Kong, despite the catchy title and interesting story line!!
