Thomas Kent James Rolfe is a huge inspiration to me and led me to discover my love for filmmaking, i'm also a huge fan of the AVGN series. So it saddens me to say I couldn't even finish this waste of time. I followed the production from announcement to completion and I can't believe how truly awful it is.. After seeing this Im left to wonder if James is in any way a competent filmmaker. Ive seen all his college films and while they aren't great they show technical competence and at least some creative ability. What it boils down to is James doesnt seem to be an especially imaginative or creative person, at least if this film is anything to go by. Everything in this film is ripped from things James likes such as video games, giant monster movies, zombie movies you get the idea. Ive seen almost all his videos so I know what he likes in movies and while he loves the superficial elements things like story, character, good writing and all the key components of a good film dont seem to interest him and this film fully demonstrates it. This isn't a movie its James Rolfe emptying his nostalgic fantasies onto the screen and putting his angry video game nerd character in the centre of it all. There is no attempt to tell a compelling story, give us interesting characters or even competent effects. The comedy is pitiful and well below what James has demonstrated in his AVGN series. James has always had a love for practical effects and has given many a bitter tirade about modern cgi so in this film he aimed for as many practical effects as possible. Are they charming? Sure. Are they in any way convincing? Of course not and maybe this was the intention but James, if you aren't gonna take this film seriously why should we? This movie is just a massive in joke and comes across as senseless. Its not funny its not entertaining and as a huge AVGN fan I was severely let down. I wish James all the best in his future projects but honestly as much as his journey inspired my younger self part of me wonders if James is just a poor filmmaker. I love James' passion but that passion is wasted in garbage like this.
blumdeluxe First of all I have to confess that I'm a total newbie to the Angry Video Game Nerd. I didn't follow his output and so I'm not familiar with his cosmos and also probably not the core group the movie is aimed at. Nevertheless a good movie in my opinion should always be capable of carrying on at least part of its charm also to outsiders. "Angry Video Game Nerd - The Movie" unfortunately doesn't manage to.It is all settled around the character himself who refuses strongly to review the "worst game of all times" (E.T.) and is tricked into dealing with the topic by a clever company fresh-woman that gives him an opportunity to prove all the myths around the game as lies. Unfortunately, they're not only true but only the starting point to much more sinister and stunning reveals. At times, the movie can be with some right called a slapstick comedy. Sadly, it is more slapstick than comedy, with old gags, mediocre attempts to steal a laugh and absurdity that at some times amuses, at other times just seems strange. Further on, I don't understand the sidekick. I don't know if he's a regular part of the show but in the movie his only task seemed to be to go on the nerves of almost everyone. All in all this was a big homage to a YouTube star. The whole world loves him in this movie, even before he literally saves it. That's maybe a bit too much, even though indeed many people love this guy. It's those people that could like the film. I can imagine if you have a stronger bonding to the character, you probably have more fun with this one. Some of the ideas and gags are actually quite entertaining and you'll probably be willing to forgive more. So if you're a fan, go for it, you will anyway, if not rather pick something else instead.
Grim9999 I'm a fan of the AVGN and respect him for making his movie and getting it out. Unfortunately the film is not what I and some others had hoped for, even with conservative expectations. Here is a summary of the good and bad aspects: THE GOOD:The sound has a nice clarity to it and the practical effects were funny at times - the models, costumes, soundtrack and sound effects in this movie had some decent effort put into them.THE BAD:Plot - Way too many plot points, at times it seems like the plot was written by an overexcited kid. This movie includes plot points involving: an evil corporation, reviewing games, hoaxes, zombies, a double agent girl, Area 51, evil military, aliens and a giant god (the poorly thought out Death Mwauthzyx). Just one or two plot points should have been the focus, instead it is needlessly convoluted. Acting - No one seems to be taking this seriously. It's meant to be fun, but don't treat it like a school play, at least give a proper performance that is serious when needed. The actors play it like a kids movie. James has a large adult fan base, so why make the screenplay and acting so childish? Also a major issue is that James himself sometimes looks so uncomfortable on screen that it's painful to watch.Writing - The humour is often lame and juvenile - eg. when the military Humvee blows up from hitting a pane of glass... Zandor's long, boring speech with a ton of exposition and clumsy foreshadowing. Cooper pushes the nerd early on, then suddenly tells him to give up and go home - inconsistent writing that is annoying to watch. Character names, including - Cockburn, McButter and Dark Onward - these are supposed to be funny? Cinematography - Many of the shots outside are overexposed; color balance and brightness is off too, to the point where the film often looks ugly.Overall - The movie should have been a lot better and also not so juvenile. I expected more from James - someone who has made short films and analyzed feature length films for years. Seemingly no one he worked with offered honest feedback and instead just agreed with him during the production. Because of all the reasons mentioned in this review, this movie really misses the mark unfortunately.
fba-30409 now i don't wanna be mean, but i guess this movie has everything that is good; the plot, the jokes, the whole way its been made is great. even the fact of having cameos by like the blacknerd and those good actors , all is nice.i just thing the nerd had put less delivery in it , its why its a little putting down, but despite it , i really thought it was an awesome movie.... I mean, this is really a great movie. it a sort of ''feel good movie'' , nice references, action-filled, etc etc.in no mean i backed this movie, but back then i remember being delighted about AVGN in being a movie.i can still say its a great piece that fan can enjoy, and remember with years. Would gladly have it in my DVD collection
