ANIMUS is in fact an indie reworking of Edgar Allan Poe's THE TELL-TALE HEART, here turned into a modern day revenge story with thriller aspects. As is usual for this genre of filmmaking, the general lack of available funds makes it something of an amateurish mess, although it's not without merit. The story is slow and unremarkable, but the photography is clear and the colour palette a good one. It's a pity the narrative feels so disjointed with the cod psychology failing to grab the viewer's attention. In the end, ANIMUS is a bit too arty and obtuse for its own good.

This film was frightening and scary and had me at the edge of my seat every minute. The mind bending reality of the real world was turned upside down as the story flows against the editing style of the movie and takes you forward and backwards at the same time. It was a fantastic watching experience as an independent film that takes a unique modern take on a classic and wonderful story. I was really surprised by Axel Harney and Bruce Spielbauer as well as Rick Dethlefsen as they are actors I would not immediately recognize, but truly drove the steering wheel of this film. The terrifying plot twist at the end was handled with such precision.

I really enjoyed this well crafted suspense thriller, especially because of its wonderful source material with the Tell Tale Heart. I had been waiting for a long time for someone to re-tell this story in a modern world. And the Director does it brilliantly here, utilizing this wonderful American Small town to tell his story. The Production Design was overall the most impressive set piece in the whole film.

I loved many things about this movie! First, the acting. Rick Dethlefson's character has a paranoid quality about him that I found fascinating to watch, and I loved Axel Harney's creepy role and how he unfolds deeper and deeper into Edgar's mind. If you like Edgar Allen Poe's Tell-Tale Heart, you'll love this classic rendition. The director, Aaron Russman, has a visual style that is very unique for films these days, and it's refreshing. His style is like nothing I've ever seen before and I can't wait to see what he does next- especially with a bigger budget!
