Miguel If you're looking for a low budget movie that makes up for it by inserting original ideas, twisted premises, social/political commentary, well... this is not the movie you're looking for. This movie follows all the clichés of a man made monster movie: bad guys make monster by mistake, try to keep it a secret and deal with for a while, until it's out there and out of control, underdog/loser has some skill that's needed and saves the day in the end, there's a comic relief sidekick (very stereotypical) and there's a love interest along the way. There's really nothing original in the plot, and there's no message/point to be made that we haven't seen a million times before. However, for what it is, it does keep you entertained, and it does have the charm of a low budget movie, and some of the jokes work, I did get a few laughs. It's a non-pretentious, straightforward, bit-of-fun movie. Don't expect too much of it, but if you're in the mood for some mindless light entertainment for a couple of hours, I'd say you'll enjoy it. I did...
jimnshay "Big Ass Spider" is a reasonably entertaining B-Movie that neither takes itself too seriously nor insults your intelligence (except with your permission). If you like this kind of comedy/horror/monster movie at all, you'll enjoy yourself here. It's not Shakespeare; then again, that's not what it said on the box. And you opened it anyway. You could compare it to a Syfy original; it's in that genre. But it's better than all than about three of them, and that's including "Sharknado." Not like BAS is genius, but Syfy movies are… not good. It does what a B is supposed to do: entertain, divert, scare a little, clown around. Decent job. A perfect NetFlix weeknight movie; even Saturday night, if you're not doing anything.
gavin6942 A giant alien spider escapes from a military lab and rampages the city of Los Angeles. When a massive military strike fails, it is up to a team of scientists and one clever exterminator to kill the creature before the city is destroyed. When a film is titled such as this one is, lower your expectations and just have fun. Some critics have said it is a return to classic Roger Corman style. That is not exactly accurate. This is even more out there than Corman was in his prime. Others have said this is not as good as the SyFy Channel films of a similar nature. Wrong again, this is superior. If a complaint had to be made, it is that the film has a subtle anti-feminist vibe. The female lead, despite being a lieutenant in the military, is utterly helpless most of the time and needs a bumbling exterminator to save her. She just needs to look pretty. Wow.It would be easy to complain about the terrible CGI, but really this is just part of the fun. The creators obviously know it does not look real, but it looks real enough for the purposes of the film -- to entertain. While it could be a "horror comedy", it is more comedy than horror, with the gory scenes far outshadowed by the humor.Just relax and have fun.
trashgang Just sit back and enjoy. Don't think, leave your brain in the cupboard and you will have your laughs now and then. This science-fiction comedy works due a few things. We do have an actually story and the acting is above mediocre. Not only that, there are serious parts involved, the army going out to destroy the spider and the funny part, a simple exterminator out to save the world with the help of his Mexican friend. The Mexican and the American alone works but both combined to rescue the world makes it even funnier. And of course when the Mexican is out for help you will have a great Mexican score. But not only that. The effects used for the spider are also above mediocre even as it is CGI. When the spider attacks and it do so in several ways, spitting acid, or making webs or just stabbing it's all dine in a rather gory way. It's not a Tucker and Dale vs Evil (2010) kind of comedy but it was indeed funny. And it moves on, there's never a moment that gets boring or whatsoever. Towards the end it's a bit of King Kong (1933) homage and even that works, by then it's just a no-brainer but it do works until the end. Stay tuned when the end credits are running, the end joke and score is great.Gore 1,5/5 Nudity 0/5 Effects 3/5 Story 3/5 Comedy 2,5/5
