Seth_Rogue_One Seriously, when it comes to horror movies 9 times out of 10 when a movie is rated low I can see why, but with this one I honestly can't.I guess maybe people expected something else, I know I did, I thought it was gonna be your typical run of the mill slasher and I had reservations to watching it due to the incredibly low rating.Currently rated 3.5/10 which is a ridiculous rating considering the overall good performances and (for me at least) interesting plot that are a lot more character driven than most horrors, which in all honestly is all about the bodycount and the kills. This one is not about that at all, and perhaps it's more of a psychological drama than it is horror but that still doesn't validate the low rating IMO.TBH a lot of the bad reviews don't seem to have watched this movie with claims that this is a pro-Christian fundamentalist movie, sure there's a lot of talk about Jesus and sins etc (hello this movie takes place at a Christian camp!) but it's not painting a flattering picture of the cult- like Christians of the camp at all and how the movie transforms in the end I really don't see how anyone can make that claim... Unless they turned it off half-way through or something...Anyway, I decided to watch it mainly for Jesse Eisenberg. He however is not in it all that much, 2 scenes basically but cut up to multiple segments throughout the movie. But that didn't really bother me because the rest of the cast were fine. It's a little cheesy at times maybe I suppose but it entertained me fine and it also had you wondering how it was gonna end which with horrors 9 times out of 10 you already know from the gate so that's definitely a plus, not a masterpiece by any means but definitely better than expected for sure.
mttpsg I think that you can see this movie from 2 points of view: religion and the wish to see a thriller movie.About the thriller movie: it's more like a spiritual horror, as many said. It manages to induce some freak, but not too much.About the religios side, because it is inspired from real facts, I think that the character didn't manage to get the real sense of religion, not even after many years. Why? because he ended the movie by wondering what could be God useful at if he didn't help him to get over his nightmares. one important thing wasn't said in this movie: if you want God to help you, then you have to ask him and pray. And in a real way, not forced by your parents or the priest. Of course your parents and the priest may guide you. We can make choices, but we can choose the good or we can choose the bad. If we choose bad then it's not God's fault that he doesn't do anything. Like Einstein said: dark is the absence of light. I think this is what we should have understood from this movie, but I didn't see that and it's a deception to see that a man who passed through that didn't finally understand the important things. And he even made a movie. deception. it my opinion.
pabald9480 I've liked movies that make religious fanaticism look like a scare tactic, and this film depicts that concept very well, but also takes it a little farther. The starring cast does a nice job, Dana Delany and Andrew McCarthy do a very nice job with their roles, although one is much more merciful than the other, when it comes to their son, who goes to the camp. Now, I'm a Christian too, but believe me, I'm far from perfect. I've also had the Bible shoved down my throat a few times, because I'm a liberal Christian, but if/when someone/anyone wants to question that, all bets are off! I don't agree with fire and brimstone preaching or scare tactics to win new believers, but I've seen plenty of it, through an old church and Christian movie productions Cloud Ten Pictures. I don't like shoving my opinions down others' throats, until they try it on me! Now, for those complaining about false advertising-granted Jesse Eisenberg only has a brief role, sorry for being so blunt, but, get over it! This isn't a horror film, this is true, as well, personally I'd call it a spiritual thriller. I also liked it because it shows what may happen if the message gets pushed too hard.
gabe-neo I have never seen such a travesty of horrible Christian hate clichés in ten movies put together, much less put all into one movie... Did this prejudice as hell director have a wild hair up his butt or was he given a propaganda type agenda to make it look like Christians were like white supremacist type psychotic Nazis? Like these morons that raised their poor kids by imposing totally regimented Catholic NOT EVEN REMOTELY BIBLICAL self propagated concentration camp antics brainwashing their kids to their own agendas. Makes Christians basically look like a Jim Jones poison kool-aid cult followers.Wow talk about reversal in roles..30 years ago they ostracized Christians hating Gays now it's like like the other way around totally... It's like you used to not admit you were Gay back then now you are afraid to admit you are Christian.... Scary movie indeed.... the evil spirits here were the movie producers for sure. Literally a nauseating movie much akin to when Mad Magazine makes horrid fun of first run movies. "Aaack!!" as Bill the Cat would say...GT
