edwardrevans The modern take on Dads Army had a lot to live up to and failed. The problem is this, we have all grown up with the original characters which are ingrained in the national psyche. We all love the original Pike, Wilson, Jones and Mannering who the later delivered his lines with brilliant comic timing. I gave up after 30mins as I got bored me thinks it was with the Rose Winters character play by Catherine zeta- Jones, nice on the eye but irritating in this.
geoffdw There are many fond reminiscences of Dad's Army but they missed many opportunities here to recapture them.Key to this are the portrayals of the characters.Even those who played them well - Toby as Mainwaring - very good.Gambon as Godfrey - brilliant.Sarah Lancashire as Mrs Pike - outshining the clothes horse CZJonesstruggle without their many catchphrases that peppered the TV series and built the atmosphere and characters.Tom Courtney was certainly lacklustre as Cpl Jones who was always the firecracker in the TV series ready for anything.Definitely not with any of the beautiful character interaction of the original that made it so strong over 80+ episodes on TV.SPOILER? And horror of horrors you get to see a fully functioning character of Mrs Mainwaring! Her presence in the TV series was always enigmatically never fully visualized - a never to be seen but looming threat that sent Mainwaring scurrying in ways that no Nazi would ever do. Seeing her revealed was quite a let down for me.Well not entirely a damp squib but only 3/10 for effort I feel after a long wait.
garrycharles5 I am not a die hard fan of the original series but when I have watched episodes over the years they have always raised a chuckle. But when I heard about the film version and saw the cast involved my interest was peaked, only to be dampened again by the poor reception from critics. With this in mind I held off watching Dad's Army until today when I attended a showing at the local town hall. Upon my arrival I realised I was the second youngest person in the room but it was good to see the venue full and from what I witnessed not one member of the audience was disappointed... Not one!As the film progressed and we were introduced to new versions of old favourites it was good to hear myself laughing along with the audience and that laughter came at regular intervals throughout the entire feature. The actors gave fantastic representations of the characters and the humour was kept at a level suited to the time period. The story was simple but pleasant and flowed along at a steady pace, carefully delivering visual and vocal gags a plenty.I enjoyed every minute of this one and I would happily sit down and watch it again and again... A great job by all involved.
Prismark10 Given that the BBC sitcom Dad's Army is still so revered after all these decades means that any film adaptation with almost an all new cast will be on a hiding to nothing. The film still has the upside down focus between Captain Mainwaring and Sergeant Wilson. The former a fastidious Little Englander bank manager. The latter, a more urbane and charming public school educated subordinate as well as a womaniser. The plot involves the Nazi's sending a secret spy to Walmington on Sea to discover the Allies D-Day plans. She is Catherine Zeta Jones masquerading as a glamorous journalist claiming to write a feature on the Home Guard. She charms most of the men in the town particularly Sgt Wilson who she knows from her days at University. The film introduces more female characters including Mrs Mainwaring and Private Godfrey's sisters who play a pivotal role in unmasking the spy. There are some inspired scenes where Mainwaring gets mistaken for Winston Churchill. I admit to being surprised to see Frank William's pop up again as the Vicar and Ian Lavender also turns up playing a different character.Toby Jones does well as Mainwaring maybe channelling Arthur Lowe. Bill Nighy comes off even more posh than John Le Mesurier and I felt that his character did not even belong as Mainwaring's number two.Tom Courtenay was underwhelming as Jones, Michael Gambon was spot on as Godfrey. The character's go through the popular catchphrases and even the theme tune turns up several times but the retread is just too workmanlike and lacked imagination. The film was too uneven, as a gentle comedy it was fine but at times it strays into smutty farce which is more Carry On especially in the scene where Fraser moons at the Nazis.
