thelastblogontheleft Also known as Emergo, this movie is, in many ways, just one big cliché. A team of parapsychologists are called in to investigate some weird phenomena that has been taking place in the home of the White family. They soon learn that not only did these bizarre experiences start shortly after Alan's (Kai Lennox) wife died during a car accident during a psychotic episode, but that they have followed the family from their previous home to their current apartment. While I think this style of movie can have great promise — the fact that you're almost constantly scanning the screen waiting for SOMETHING to pop up means it's high tension regardless of dialogue or depth — it's also been done to death, so it's easy to just fall into the category of "yep, seen it before" as this one does. The experts (Michael O'Keefe, Rick Gonzalez, and Fiona Glascott, all of whom I actually really liked) spend SO much time explaining what they're doing and why they're doing it and debating over the semantics and while it's logical it's just useless fluff in a movie like this. They hit every classic thing you expect to see in movies like this: the dad is hiding some deeper psychological trauma which is eventually confessed, the teenage girl is angsty as hell, a bench moves on its own, there's a seance where things get pretty intense… yadda yadda yadda.Honestly, I really appreciated the largely natural acting job done by most of the people involved (Michael O'Keefe being my favorite, followed closely by Rick Gonzalez who was just awesome), but it was just… trying to be too much at once. The daughter, Caitlin (Gia Mantegna), is just infuriating to watch. There's a few half-hearted jump scares but ultimately anything that required any special effects – the images during the stroboscope, for example, or the very last scene of the movie – was cheesy to the point of being laughable. It sadly just missed the mark at every turn.
ICanNeverThinkOfAGoodUsername This film has got to be one of the worst films I've ever seen. It's a predictable film, but what makes it so much more worse is the dodgy camera angle! The film's angle is extremely dodgy and the quality is not clear at all. So that combined with a bad plot is a recipe for disaster...The film isn't interesting in the slightest. In fact the only interesting scene was the last one whereby the main character explained the whole film and what actually happened. I feel in an attempt to make the audience understand what was going on throughout the film, the camera crew and co explained small stuff to the child in the film... In doing so the audience understood what all the equipment was for. There is really nothing else to say about this film. It was an extremely boring film. Nothing about this film was scary nor jumpy, it's simply random generic events. You want to know what the cause of all this is and that's why you watch till the end.The ending of the film makes no sense what so ever! But by this time the whole film is already a let down, that you expect the ending to be a let down. The whole film is low budget and it's extremely obvious. There is nothing wrong with a film being low budget, but in this film the plot didn't make up for it. There are so many plot holes in this film...Overall, I definitely would not recommend this film.Spoilers ahead: 1. Okay, so Caitlin has schizophrenia... How does that explain the picture turning upside down and the teapot moving? 2. How was Caitlin in the air towards the end? 3. Why didn't the doctor tell Alan he knew he was lying about how his wife died? 4. Who was the girl at the end?
Michael O'Keefe A family moves into apartment 143 and experiences activity that is just not normal. A team of parapsychologists sets out to investigate the phenomena: phones ringing with no caller, poltergeist activity and unexplained flashing lights are more than enough reason to set up state-of-the-art technology. The group attempts to contact the "other side" while their investigation is interrupted by manifestations that are succeeding in accelerating their violence. Not the best in the "found footage" genre; but there are a whole lot worse out there. The cast includes: Fiona Glascott, Kai Lennox, Gia Mantengna, Fancesc Garrido and Michael O'Keefe.
Robynne T I love a good movie. I even love the occasional bad movie! I am also enough of a movie buff to be fair when watching a B film, but this film was beyond awful. I can only assume that the makers of Emergo (or Apartment 143 as it was titled on Netflix) decided to try to cash in on the popularity of movies like Paranormal Activity and make their own. They failed in a completely miserable way. What they ended up with was a stinker so bad, that I couldn't wait to inform you all not to waste 85 minutes of your time. A family is having difficulties here. Mom died and Dad appears to be doing the best he can for his two children. The teenage daughter blames him for her mother's death and hates him, and his young son is just a happy little kid that apparently is unaffected by anything. Now strange, paranormal things are happening in the house (ie: slamming doors, windows, moving furniture, etc.), and when Dad moves his family, the paranormal activity follows them to their new house. Now Dad hires a paranormal investigative team to help. Sounds like a movie worth watching if you like that sort of stuff right? Wrong! Here's the bottom line: Plot? Garbage. Premise? Garbage. Acting? Garbage. Dialogue? Garbage. Characters? Unlikable, unbelievable garbage (The "Doctor" tells Dad to relax and do nothing while his daughter is being physically hurt! Yeah the Doc was the worst character of all) Sound Garbled garbage Lighting? Dull garbage. Special Effects? A 6yr old could do better garbage. I'm so glad that if I had to watch this at all, I saw it on Netflix. At least I didn't waste money on a ticket. But I want my time back. I cannot remember the last time I was so disappointed in a movie... and I paid money in a theatre to see the Blair Witch sequel!
