blrnani A truly great action film that provides us with a worthy legacy from the master, Bruce Lee. It also kindles the inevitable 'what if' nostalgia, wondering where his career might have gone if blessed with Jackie Chan longevity. Tho' I do worry about Jackie's well-being, still doing so many stunts himself, even today. Bruce Lee always seemed to be the physical ideal - strong but quick and light; a contrast to the muscle-bound Schwarzeneggers - so it is still hard to accept that his body betrayed him in the end, if we are to believe the official story. But celebrity does have its temptations and pitfalls and it was a period when drug taking was considered normal in certain spheres. Moreover cocaine, especially, feeds the notion of of immortality, of being untouchable and capable of anything (while simultaneously wreaking its internal damage). Who knows what really happened, but I shall always treasure my copy of this film.
douglasmusselman Into the Dragon was the pioneer of kung fu movies, and you can tell. The style of movie is very fun to watch because of the non stop action and over the top sound effects. Many movies have taken inspiration from Into the Dragon, but none will have the effect on views that this movie first had. I don't think the film has aged well due to outdated soundtrack and camera shots, but will remain a classic for a long time. I think that Han killed Williams because he knew they were up to something, but spared Roper because he deemed him more valuable. Many films replicate Into the Dragon's style, such as Kill Bill, and the mirror scene in John Wick 2 was definitely a homage to this movie. Seeing as many of today's movies take from Into the dragon, it is definitely worth the watch. Would watch again.
groberts-218-710539 Enter the Dragon, starring Bruce Lee and directed by Robert Clouse. This movie came out in the early 1970s, back when action movies haven't fully attracted audiences around the world. But along came Enter the Dragon. This movie really launched the action genre to be one of the most common genres. The action scenes all really hold up, although some of the sound effects didn't age that well but it doesn't take itself seriously so most of it holds up well. One thing that doesn't hold up is the use of female characters. They are mostly used as sex symbols, because nowadays females have much bigger roles in movies, they impact the plot. During the film one of the main characters is killed, Williams, and it took me a while to figure out why he was killed. I think he was killed because Han though that he was the one roaming around at night. Newer films like John Wick Chapter 2 (2017) and The Guest (2014) have taken one scene in particular. The scene where Lee fights Han in the room filled with mirrors. No one had seen a scene like that back then. But what this movies takes from other movies is the look of the movie looks like and sounds like a James Bond movie. The isolated island with a secret lair deep inside it. The music score has a lot of bass and very slow. This movie is a lot of fun to watch. It is a perfect movie to have friends over and watch it with popcorn.
Giallo Fanatic Bruce Lee rose to international fame with this movie, but sadly he didn't see it happen. It is by now well known he wanted to be famous, Bruce Lee wanted to be the most famous Chinese man there ever was. He succeeded. Everyone who says Bruce Lee often thinks of the best fighter there ever lived, much the same way when we say Einstein is synonymous with genius. This movie set standards for the martial arts movies to come, also we saw a lot of copycats but they didn't match the brilliance of 'Enter the Dragon'. It has a plot that is basically the cliché of almost every action/martial arts movie: regain honor and get vengeance. The plot is very simple and the story isn't complex either. But we get introduced into each character and get to know their motivations. Lee wants revenge for the death of his sister - and regain honor to the Shaolin temple -, Roper wants to get away from his creditors and Williams wants to get away from the racism of America and fight. Three good guys with each their own agenda. Then there is the ultimate villain that has a small twist of a James Bond villain named Mr. Han - pun intended for his missing hand? - who is out to recruit new good fighters, so he can expand his evil empire. It sounds rather cheesy and in most cases it would be cheesy, but with a solid script and graceful direction by Robert Clouse the movie turned into a classic. Each character was developed, the simple plot played out well, the fight scenes were simple yet intense to watch, the story had depth and most importantly, the main characters were played well. Although the movie is an action movie it also managed to be character and plot driven. We even saw some decent drama. Which is a rare combination and which is something that most action movies have a hard time to match. Although the Roper and Williams characters were added because of racism and prejudice that the little Chinese man wasn't attractive, Bruce out shined both John Saxon and Jim Kelly. But it isn't to say John and Jim are bad actors, Bruce had just more charisma. But John is a brilliant actor and he carried his role with grace. Jim was pretty good too considering he was a virtually inexperienced actor. All three of them created a group dynamic that was both immersing and at times fun to watch. Another important men were Robert Clouse and Michael Allin, they were an important part of what was happening on screen. Clouse brought a lot of elegance in the fight scenes and make every actor act convincingly whilst, Allin made a good script for the movie. Allin's script was both well thought out and well written since the plot and story were an important part of the movie.Influential movie and a colorful martial arts movie with different philosophies and ideas presented. 9/10
