Reviews

Michael Ledo The story is told from the journal of Civil War soldier, Edward Young (Mark Gibson). It includes excessive boring narration. Rather than just let the story unfold, the narrator tells you what you are seeing. It grates on you after the first 30 minutes. After a quick 1865 scene where a single Union soldier is a zombie, the movie jumps to 1871 and there is a minor zombie infestation. Edward had to kill his own wife (Sarah Stunt) and son, the later in an emotionally gripping scene as he holds his zombie son (Christian Martyn) in his arms (facing away) as he reluctantly puts a gun to his son's head... all the while his son is trying to eat his face off. Somehow I didn't feel it.Bits and pieces of the story is told through animation, which unfortunately was far better than the main feature. Edward has tasked himself in taking his son's ashes to a waterfalls, something he had promised him when he was alive. There is an unwritten rule that all promises terminate with any zombie infestation, apparently not known in the 19th century. The story involves his journey to get there and the people/zombies he meets up with along the way.Dee Wallace, the closet thing to an actor in this film gives us a career killer performance as she emotionally explains the origins of the living dead. It was tough to sit through. The film utilizes the sad piano/violin sound track for way too much of the production.Zombie fans should avoid this one. I was confused as I couldn't tell if the film was a bad zombie film or a bad drama with zombies. No f-bombs, sex, or nudity. Zombie make-up was good where it was applied, exposed necks are optional.***POSSIBLE PLOT SPOILER*** The film attempts to come across as a prequel for zombie films. It does a very poor job. It tells you zombies were created using African spells. But at the same time refutes that idea by making it seem zombies are caused by a virus, with one person in the film having natural immunity, and the infection spreading by a saliva/blood contact. You can't have it both ways.
Hampton McMurray This film is serious, artful, and epic. Being a fan of zombies, I've seen my share of terrible movies just because they contain the walking dead. This is definitely not one of them.Exit Humanity is a story of redemption, rebirth, and the horrors that come from not the supernatural horrors stalking the hills of Tennessee, but of the cruelty of man and the poison that resides within. This film is the classic maturation/acceptance story. Far from the drek that is continually pumped out of the low budget horror genre in which people die gruesomely as the main plot device, Exit Humanity takes the concept that zombies are only the setting for the real storyline. What we are treated to is a deeper look into the characters and the lingering touch of haunting past deeds. We are presented with many thought-provoking instances and artistic licensing that reflects more enjoyment that the typical rend and tear zombie film. The ending scene is poetry, a mirror image, two sides of a coin, the paths of damnation and salvation catching briefly a glimpse of each other. This movie is beautiful and deserves nothing less than the highest rating. If you enjoy the heroic journey or the Freud/Jungian aspects of mythology given visual production, this is the movie for you.
imrational I would probably consider this the best zombie movie of 2012. Keep in mind that there weren't much going against it. The latest Resident Evil movie was decent, but nothing really new.Exit Humanity it a total B-Budget zombie movie done right. It is slow paced, which I know some people would hate on, but I enjoyed. The director got the atmosphere right with this one. You end up caring about the characters. Acting is well done, along with the settings and music score. Make-up was the only thing that really showed this as a B-Budget endeavor.I would be willing to invest in a future film effort by this director. He's going to go up in Hollywood. Other directors have tried to do historical zombie movies, but this was the first one to actually do it well. He obviously strived for "epic" movie, and managed to succeed. Well done sir!
darqueimages I knew I was in for a treat when within the first 5 minutes of this film I was engrossed in it. "Exit Humanity" is a very well written film within the zombie genre. Generally, I love zombie films. Some are hit and miss, others like this one, grab my attention right away. The story, the practical effects, costuming, and even the settings were top notch. Setting the film just after the U.S. Civil War was a stroke of genius. So what if it makes it a period film... it was a very well executed period film. At the risk of repeating myself, I think the execution of the storyline deserves mentioning again, of course, without giving any spoilers. The story itself is rather well written, with plenty of points to hit on one's emotions. While it is a zombie film, there are some moments that do tug at the heart strings a little and we catch more than a hint of the darker side of man. Conclusion: 9/10 from me. The effects could've been just a tad better, the story did move a little slow though, and I would've liked to seen something more with the film's ending. Overall, I am so glad that I added this film to my collection.
