nadeshikomail This movie reminds me of my personal life and culture. I have a great connection with my father as I considered him as a family man. In my place, most of people only see love story between parents and children represented by a mother. And this movie proved to me that kind of mindset isn't always right. In this movie we could see how a love between father and daughter could be strong as well. A girl waiting faithfully for her father who leaves her. She strongly believes deep inside her heart that love always finds its way. No matter how long should she wait for him, nor where could they reunite. This story explores how much she is longing for her father to come back, she goes back to the shore every day as a form of her love. The animation itself brought many nostalgic feelings to me, and the music even told us briefly about the emotion and situation we were facing in each scene.
aggelostenshimanga At a young age, we see a girl and her father cycling until they reach a boat. The father boards and goes away, after embracing his daughter. From that day, we see the girl returning to that place over and over, waiting for her father who doesn't return. Years pass and the girl makes friends, and gets her own family, but she cannot get over the loss of her father. This is a beautiful short, that relies a lot on symbolism to convey its message, therefore allowing various interpretations. That is also supported by the stylized animation that allows the viewer to decide on the feelings of the characters, something harder to achieve in the case of real life acting or a more detailed animation style. In my opinion, the story is about living and dealing with a loss at a young age. Life is symbolized by the bicycle, and the act of cycling. The older a character is, the slower they cycle, their health (presumably both physically and mentally) deteriorating. Notice how both main characters eventually abandon their bicycle to traverse the water and the plain, seemingly never coming back. In both cases, their journey ends in the boat, and then their souls reunite, a theme similar to the ancient Greek myth of crossing the river Acheron with a boat to access the next world.
ManOfKino A little girl goes to the seaside with her father, who then departs alone in a rowboat. He doesn't return, so the girl keeps coming back to the same place to wait for him. We see instances from her life as she grows older, makes friends, build a family etc. all centred on the absence of the father. This beautifully-made animated short has a simple but expressive art style, and uses a very restrained and subdued colour palette composed mainly of white and shades of brown. No words are ever spoken, and the piano-based music feels like it's from one or two centuries ago. This produces an effect that is primarily one of melancholy. The repetitive nature of the story conveys the senses of loss and absence powerfully, and the way the passage of time is woven into the story -indicated by such things as transformations in the landscape (such as the change of seasons), in the protagonist's appearance and in the circumstances surrounding her- reinforces the melancholic mood. This is not a film to watch for a surprise-filled story as the story that is there is very compact and there are no surprises. Instead, it's one to watch for to appreciate the visual aesthetics and to "savour" the mood.
ruckingham This short movie taught my heart. The story is about a father and a daughter according to the title. The father leaves when the daughter was young at the first place of the movie. After long time ago, she can see him again at last. What is interesting point being we can sympathize with her feeling despite no dialogue. Instead of conversation, there are expressive music and drawing. The music taught my heart. When she walks lightly with his father, the music sounds happy. On the other hand, after separate from him, music sounds something lonely. Moreover, there was some sounds of things such as birds' cry and the bike wheels turn. They made the movie more expressive because the quietness of the scene stands out. The quietness leads the feeling of her, loneliness. The drawing is amazing, too. The picture is simple, but it rather expresses idyllic taste. The scene of the movie should not be in city or something busy because this story matches for a calm place. The simple pictures make viewers focus on only the father and girl. There is not something useless. I couldn't understand meaning of characters in the movie. The more you see it, the more you discovery. I want to watch this one again.
