thesar-2 Well, this confirms it. I'm gay.As beautiful I think Angelina Jolie is and as much of a girl-crush I have on her, seeing her nude in Gia was nothing to me. I think I even checked my phone during her gratuitous nude scenes. Rise/Fall movies are fairly common. Many of the "True Story" films are based on this and sometimes they're harder to watch than others. This one was tough, indeed, but not in the top ten, by a long-shot.Gia, according to these accounts, was given the world (of fashion) at the cost of basically nothing. Her strong attitude, wise-cracking one-liners and switchblade made her stand out from the shallow and brainless Barbie Dolls, but she quickly succumbed to drugs. And that takes up the majority of the "fall" part.Sure, it's hard to see someone so gifted with genuine beauty throw it all away for addiction. *I* know addiction. I know this is all true. So, yeah, I know how true something can rule your life until you got nothing. In the real life, Angelina was really just starting out here and she proved immediately how great she is. She's the star and most important part of this semi-documentary, semi-overdramatic TV movie. Mercifully, as she was at the "rise" part of the title character's plight, she didn't take the same destructive tendencies.Again, Rise/Fall films show the same sad adventures, but this film is still significate because of how absolutely gorgeous this woman was and how many wonderful chances she was bestowed and how one can literally destroy themselves inside and out.***Final thoughts: I'm sure people would watch this only for the girl-on-girl action and multiple female nude scenes. Hell, I'm not perfect and choose some films for the same reason, though they're men in those roles. But, there is so much more than just the free shows in the first half or so. Yeah, spoiler, if all you're interested in is a free show of breasts, you can stop about half-way through. The rest is the best message you can take from this.
ankur_sardana Gia leaves a mark on the viewer. I know nothing about the real Gia (pardon my ignorance) but I could feel her in Jolie. I think she has acted superbly, probably she identified with Gia. The interviews of people who knew Gia actually weren't enacted that well and seemed a little made up. But in Gia, one finds the traces of that wild -tender friend, which I guess we all have. The movie falls into the category (though at a lower rank) of 'Trainspotting' and 'Requiem for a Dream'. The portrayal of the female love and the way Gia wants to be the man is quite nicely shown. I just wish that the movie had no interview format and had let Gia to tell her own story. (8 September 2006)
ihatechoosingusernames05 I am always blown away by these in depth reviews..mine will always be as short as I can make them. IMDb requires 10 lines. RME. I don't have that much to say about this movie or any movie I don't think. Gia was a decent movie. I love AJ she did a great job, I had not heard of this super model of course I looked her up while I was watching this movie. I saw this movie quite some time ago. I suppose it is possible she would have been big if she had not passed but I don't think she was that big, still it was a good story. I need more lines to make 10. belleanddan I just finished watching this movie and felt like I could immediately relate to Gia. The feeling of being 'unloved' at her age is something I could immediately relate to, being that I was kicked out of my house at 17 and, like her, had to learn to make it on my own. Being thrown into the harsh realities of an industry as cutthroat as the fashion world would have been a lot to deal with, and drugs were an easy escape; it could have happened to anyone in her shoes. This is one of those movies that will really touch you, and Angelie Jolie did an amazing job of bringing Gia's spirit to life. This was the best performance I've ever seen from her, surprisingly from what was just an HBO movie. This is a film that really deserved a theatrical release and could have been much bigger than it was; but I still appreciate HBO for bringing the movie to life.If you have any interest in fashion, a touching love story, or just want to see an amazing performance by Angelie Jolie this is definitely a movie worth watching that you won't forget.
