cjs6547 This movie brought an interesting idea to the table - that the original was completely true and that those actors are now missing and/or dead. But the way it executes this idea is just terrible. 20+ minutes of a boring group of teens making the discovery that GE was NOT fabricated, and making the obvious decision to follow in its footsteps and sacrifice their lives for a sequel. It's not like they capture anything on tape that wasn't already done in GE - in fact the number of different scare methods are actually less. But the atmosphere is still there and watching it before bed has robbed me once again of sleep. What can I say I have a weakness for the asylum setting. The characters are kind of obnoxious compared to the previous movie, and the camera is definitely more shaky than I remembered, making this a more annoying experience than it had to be. Not to mention the ending is a major disappointment. I am not one for the 'everybody dies' endings, but the escape and the manner it was achieved kind of ruined the experience. If you loved GE you could watch this, or you could just re-watch GE for a better time.
Guillermo Bosque Summary: Sometimes silly and effectively creepy. Grave Encounters 2 is just a mixed bag, great poster though. 44/100 (C-)Grave Encounters, film student Alex Wright is out to prove them wrong. Alex is as obsessed with the first film as the 20 million people who viewed its viral trailer on YouTube. While he and his friends research the events and visit the real psychiatric hospital depicted in the original film, they find themselves face-to-face with unspeakable evil, banking on the hope that their knowledge of the original film will help them survive the sequel. Grave Encounters 2 doesn't quite live up my expectations and was not as scary as the first one, but it was a very entertaining sequel. It was scary, but sometimes silly. I saw it in theaters, because I like supporting indie-horror films like this one. I actually enjoyed some moments of this movie, but as a whole is just a mess. Most of the scares were predictably bad. Just a few scares throughout the film were effective and well done. A good example was that scene involving a Ouija board, it was the best scene in the film; I found it scary, suspenseful and effective. At times, a lot of moments with scary potential were ruined by the terrible direction, and the bad acting. Most of the scares as I said were very predictable, even though the suspense was quite effective and creepy. Poliquin does not take risk and goes for the easy way... jump-scares. Also, there were too many ghosts with big mouths into the film and they were so repetitive and annoying. The acting was uneven, the pretty young actress Leanne Lapp (Jennifer) was the only one who gave a believable performance and she's the only one who caught my attention. The rest of the performers were awful and annoying. Some of the special effects were horrible and the CGI ruined some scary moments. The direction was hit and miss. The scares have a good build-up suspense, but the climax of these was not effective. In the positive side the gory scenes were enjoyable and there were a few surprising moments. There was a highly effective twist in the second half of the movie and I found it very original. In the negative side, the script was sometimes laughable and the acting was generally bad. Grave Encounters 2 is a mixed bag, not as good as the first one. Some horror fans will love it, it has some thrilling and seriously messed up moments. I wish good luck to The Vicious Brothers they have potential writing stories, but they have to make them less messy. (C-)
Michael O'Keefe A pretty decent sequel. All the video chat crap is pretty irritating. Nonetheless, film student Alex Wright(Richard Harmon)becomes obsessed with a horror flick that went viral on YouTube. It has been a year since a film crew spent a fatal night at a psychiatric hospital and for some reason is being covered up, as it really did not happen as depicted to millions of stunned PC screen watchers. Alex is so consumed by GRAVE ENCOUNTERS that he convinces a group of friends, most non-believers, to find the Collingwood Psychiatric Hospital in search of the truth. What they find are dark halls, empty rooms; all the remnants of a deserted hospital. They set up their cameras and all seems quiet until like a demon out of hell causes paranormal activity. A terrified camera crew now believes Alex...that *h!# really did happen in the movie. As the group gets smaller and all power is lost, pure evil is discovered. Not so bad for a "found lost footage" type flick. There are some scary moments; but there is also some cheesy special effects and real bad acting. I think it is bad enough to be good! Like I said, after the video chat lead in is over with GRAVE ENCOUNTERS 2 is more than tolerable. Also getting cast credits are: Stephanie Bennett, Dylan Playfair, Howie Lai, Leann Lapp and Sean Rogerson.
theadventuresofimo Cliché counter:1. Women wearing tank tops where you scene of seeing down their top. 2. College kids who smoke weed, party, drink booze and talk about sex about how fantastic they are. 3. No one seems to go to class and also they are able to skip class for days and not stress about it. 4. Main character has unlimited money for transportation. 5. Over use of demon face effect (google it) 6. They witness the impossible and yet they will not take other peoples explanations or methods. 7. Predictable deaths (One scene, a kid advertises how he is going to die). 8. Pointless running off to get killed. 9. Cell phones don't work. 10. They have a Canadian accent, yet they live in the US. 11. Pointless expose scenes. 12. Filming for no reason. 13. Ghosts can do every thing, I mean EVERY thing! 14. When they are scared one guy will freak out and every one else is yelling. 15. Stupid shock scene using baby. 16. Characters will suddenly fill in the plot by claiming they read this some where, Yet they had never mention it prior to the event. 17. All characters are jerks. 18. Talking to the camera and leaving a verbal will. 19. Trying to hide from entities that are attacking them and yet some how are surprised that they got found 20. Between footage you get a split second shot of them in the mental institute. 21. They never contact the police, EVER. 22. Get lost easily, I am surprised how they make it out of their dorm alive (yes i know the reason how they get lost).
