Samuel-Shovel Gremlins has all the characteristics of a cheesy, campy B-horror movie from the 80's. In theory it shouldn't work but it just does. It perfectly balances the amount of humor to horror, never tipping the scales too much in either direction as this movie flies by, an enjoyable 90-some odd minutes.Everything about this plot is fun, from the quirky father who invents the odd contraptions in an attempt to support his family, to the innocent, angel-like young lead who works at a bank to support his family and his adorable sidekick of a dog, to the villainous bank owner and all her cats named after money (who plays far less of a role than I anticipated), it all works. The gremlins themselves are an impressive feat of animatronics for the time period. Gizmo is the adorable little hero that you hate yourself for finding so cute and the gremlins themselves are just scary enough to pose an actual threat to the characters in this movie. I love how quickly we go from Chinatown to these Gremlins tearing the town apart. This movie flies by at a good clip. Besides the scene of them and their antics inside the bar, I don't think there were any scenes I thought dragged on too long. This movie is also littered with fun little trivia facts. The inclusion of Howie Mandel as a voice actor, a young Corey Feldman in a bit role, the use of the Back to the Future set, all of this adds to the enjoyment you get out of watching this odd little horror film.If you're looking for something a little out of the norm to watch on Christmas day, look no further than this gem.
jamesgandrew Gremlins is one of my favourite movies that seamlessly blends comedy and horror or as some might label it a horror comedy. Gremlins takes the innocent time of Christmas and takes a satirical yet dark spin on the holiday, highlighting societal issues of consumerism, patriotism and greed. The film paints a pessimistic view on Christmas and how these issues can inevitably lead to chaos. It's a great metaphor for how the holiday is swept in ideas of consumerism, yet it's painted to be a time of joy and innocence. What's funny about this movie is how it depicts these issues. The Gremlins are mischievous creatures who embody everything wrong with consumerism, once you break the rules everything can go wrong. It's a great satire on how American culture can't always take responsibility for commercial items. Mrs Deagle represents greed and her unlikeable character is hysterical because it epitomises the essence of greed.Joe Dante alludes his premise to 1950's horror movies like Invasion of the Body Snatchers, which are directly referenced in the film. It takes these concepts and takes a satirical spin, using the monsters as a metaphor not as a gimmick.Gremlins is simply brilliant and I notice something new every time I watch the movie. It's not just a great movie to watch around Christmas, it's a great movie to watch all around.
daddysarm Since I was past puberty the first time I saw this & am a LOT older now, maybe I just needed to be 10 yrs old to like this. I LOVE comedy. WACKY comedy. Verbal comedy. Physical comedy. This? Violence-as-Comedy??? I don't get it. It is just stupid & annoying. 4* for the Positives = up until the gremlins take over, it is quite cutesy nostalgic & the gremlins & mogwai are well done. But, the Violence-as-Comedy story??? Keep it. Seriously, it is NOT "horror". It is NOT "comedy". It is just Violence-as-Comedy. I didn't even finish watching it this 2nd time.
Paul Magne Haakonsen The 1984 "Gremlins" movie is a classic in the horror comedy genre, and it actually still is capable of standing its ground today. So it is definitely a movie that is quite worth watching if you haven't already seen it. "Gremlins" is a movie that I have watched countless times, and will continue to watch every now and then with some years in between each viewing. If you haven't already seen "Gremlins", then you are definitely missing out on a great classic horror comedy.I feel that it is redundant to summarize the storyline, especially because "Gremlins" is the type of movie that everyone should already be familiar with. But in the off chance that you aren't familiar with the movie, then let's just quickly summarize the storyline. The story told in "Gremlins" is about a young man whose father gives him a most unique creature named Gizmo for a pet, a creature known as a 'mogwai'. There are three simple rules to keeping the furry, cuddly little creature. 1) Don't expose it to water. 2) Never feed it after midnight. 3) No direct sunlight. When the rules are accidentally broken, the creature reproduce, but these creatures do not share Gizmo's friendly and peaceful demeanor. And the small township is soon overrun with green, nasty gremlins wrecking havoc and terrorizing the Citizens."Gremlins" is a good combination of story elements and genres, which makes for a very memorable movie that you can watch again and again, because the story never gets old.And while the movie is from 1984, then the special effects are actually quite good, even by today's standards. And the movie does stand its ground still, and it is still quite watchable. The creature design, both for the mogwai and the gremlins is quite good, and very memorable. Once you have seen "Gremlins" for the first time, you will never forget the mogwai or the gremlins, trust me. Yes, it is that memorable. There are also some memorable acting performances in "Gremlins". Zach Galligan and Phoebe Cates really carried the movie quite nicely. But there were also some very memorable appearances by Hoyt Axton and Dick Miller. Furthermore, it was also fun to watch a young Corey Feldman make a small appearance here."Gremlins" is a movie that can be watched by adults and kids alike, because there is something for just about everyone here, whether you like comedy or little green monsters and everything in between. This is indeed a wholehearted movie that will never become obsolete. And as of 2017, the movie has luckily not yet gone through a reboot of older movies, as Hollywood has been making heaps of within the last couple of years. And I hope this classic doesn't go through the butchery of a remake or reboot, because it is great as it already is.
