ireallyhatebs The plot really wasn't even much of one and I thought it meandered all over the place like a drunk leaving a bar. In the end, I felt that the director (if he can really call himself one) left far too many loose threads than should be allowed. The premise of the movie didn't make much sense, either. The way it started off was pretty lame. Following 'Telal' from his 'escape,' if you can call it that, made no sense. Having Selena conveniently explain stuff didn't make it any easier to swallow, either. The superstitious mumbo jumbo didn't make the movie any more interesting, it just provided more of a convenient vehicle to drag it out.Overall, a really bad movie. I think it lowered my IQ several points! I wouldn't recommend it to anybody.May Telal be a curse upon this horrid movie!
Paul Andrews Guardian starts in 'Feburary 1991 Southern Iraq' where archaeologist Aaron Lichtmann (Todd McKee) uncovers an ancient artifact, however the Iraqi workers on the dig turn on Lichtmann fearing the artifact as an evil prophecy. Lichtmann is shot dead, US special forces agent John Kross (Mario Van Peebles) tries to save Lichtmann's wife (Phyllis Lyons) who has just given birth but is attacked by a mysterious woman who carves ancient symbols into his chest before he is rescued. Jump forward to 'Los Angeles 12 Years Later' where Kross is now a LAPD detective & is working on a drugs case trying to stop a new narcotic called 'Chaos' which turns users into killers. However a woman named Selene (Stacy Oversier) contacts him & says that a demon named Telal has is loose & is trying to kill the only person who can stop him, David (Steve Zad) the son of Aaron who Kross saved. She also tells Kross that he is the 'Guardian' of David & he must help defeat the demon Telal, understandably Kross is unconvinced at first...Co-written directed by John Terlesky I thought Guardian was yet another low budget totally forgettable horror film that ultimately didn't do much for me. The script by Terlesky, Gary J. Tunnicliffe & Jeff Yagher is as much a crime thriller as horror although the connection between the drugs & horror elements didn't gel for me, the film starts out heavy on the drugs side of the story but then that gets forgotten about as the demon possession story comes to the surface. It's a bit uneven to watch but at least it tries something a bit different which is to be applauded. The character's aren't anything special & the dialogue isn't any better. It's a little on the slow side apart from a few low key action scenes, to be honest it's not a great film although it's far from terrible. I mean I only watched it last night & I've already pretty much forgotten all about it, there isn't much more I can say about it except that it's average at best.Director Terlesky does OK, it's reasonably well made but it's nothing special. There's no style or visual flair & it's all rather flat & bland, it looks a bit like a cheap TV show. There are no traditional jumps or scares in a horror film sense & the action scenes were obviously hampered by the low budget as they aren't very good. Forget about any gore because there isn't any, apart from some shoot outs there isn't even any decent violence either.Technically the film is OK, it's not going to win any awards but at least it's competent. The acting isn't great although Van Peebles is alright, villain for hire Ice-T makes an appearance & he puts in his usual swear word filled performance.Guardian is an OK film, it's nothing special but at the same time it'll pass 90 odd minutes if your not to demanding. What else can I say? I can't recommend it but it's not as bad as some low budget horror films out there.
Theo Robertson Is it possible that screenwriters can get so bored typing away at a keyboard they decide to write another movie while they`re one third way through a screenplay ? This is the impression I got from watching director/writer John Terlesky`s GUARDIAN ***** MILD SPOILERS *****This starts off with a USMC recon mission to Iraq during the 1991 gulf war , then about a third of the way through it changes into something along the lines of NEW JACK CITY , while the final third becomes a supernatural fight between good and evil . I also couldn`t help noticing that other films are " paid homage to " , films that have a body jumping demon as in SHOCKER and FALLEN or a leather clad heroine like in THE MATRIX while a secret military mission against natives who believe in supernatural legends owes a little to PREDATOR Despite the unoriginal material and a ending that left me totally confused ( Did Mr Terlesky just get bored writing fight scenes ? ) there is some entertainment to be found in GUARDIAN mainly because the whole feel of the movie keeps switching around thus making it somewhat unpredictable . It`s by no means a great movie though
Gordy Wright SLIGHT SPOILERS This could have been a very good film.It is the kind of film where somebody came up with a fairly good plot, and a decent cast, then the accountants got at it, and ripped the guts out of it.The plot is simple, an archeaologist in Iraq, inadvertantly releases a demon, a soldier who is there to guide a smart bomb onto the dig site gets involved with Sumerian legend without his knowledge, gets shot and we jump 12 years into the future, LA 2003.I was halfway through the film before I got a grip on it, kept on watching, waiting for the big ending, and it never happened. There is a slight similarity to Denzil Washingtons Fallen, and this would seem to be an attempt at suspense and betrayal, it works a bit, but is too easily seen through. It is watchable, but with a bit of work it could have been much better. If you know the way when you eat a big Chinese meal, and you are stuffed full, then two hours later you are hungry again, then you will know what I mean.It wasn't a bad film, it just seems like it because it falls so short of what it could and should have been. 5/10
