Aparna Gangopadhyay A tourist guide (Raju) helps a courtesan cum prostitute's daughter (later a wife of an archaeologist) Rosie, to make it big as a stage dancer.Raju breaks off all relations from his aged mother, friends from childhood – in fact his entire village – just to make Rosie achieve her dreams of dancing on stage.Of course Rosie was beautiful to look at too – the prostitutes are very clever – they only let the sperm of a good looking client to fertilize their ovum during the 'fertile' period of the month. This was they ensure the birth of good looking offsprings – for in their world – only physical beauty is important – they don't need good heart or nice behaviour – because they get paid for physical appeal only – poor things! So this village bred – more or less illiterate Raju – gets to sleep with a pretty female…who was also kind of experienced in 'sex' – remember she was married with an aged khadoos – she surely wasn't a virgin! No no – explicit 'love-making' scenes are not shown between Raju and Rosie in the film – just a slight hint – for it was shot in the 1960's – when we, the Indians, were very back-dated and hypocrites – and believed that skin flicks and 'humping scenes' should not be included in regular family films..in blue-films it was okay I guess!(not sure – was not born then…so cannot tell much about the hippy culture) Anyways, Rosie did not take much time to become famous. Most Indian males go crazy when they see a beautiful female jumping high & low wearing transparent thingies. She reached the big stage because she knew of some Indian classical dance mudras too…otherwise she would have remained a local stage dancer who are watched by drunkards and whistled at….like the present day bar dancers (dance balas) basically! Raju, who was born and brought up in dire poverty, was enjoying the sudden downpour of wealth – he soon became a drunkard and a gambler – so clichéd huh! Then he was jailed for forgery – then he was mistaken for a saint by illiterate villagers, then he died. End of story! Why are people so sympathetic towards this Raju guide is what I fail to understand! Guess what..this story – Upanayas – was included in the Hindi syllabus of Class XI in Kendriya Vidyalaya!! – no…not in my session..or else I would have barbarically raped it!! Lol!
prashant407 Guide is a movie wherein all the emotions and reactions of love is well pictured. A simple man falls in love for the first time and cannot accept failure, though his love was very unconventional.Failure in love makes him,"What worse can happen, I have already felt enough pain". He becomes Devdas and Dev D of modern times. His wants his love to see the pain and suffering he is going through. In an unprecedented event he went to jail and later realize that there are other things in life worth living for. In those days going to Jail is a serious character assassination for non-political person. When he came out of jail, he saw the world suffering from hunger and poverty. He preached self satisfaction and faith to common masses. The end was really heart touching, he fasted in desert till it rained and the people are blessed. The character is not a larger than life image of a Super Star, its a simple man with utmost humble and simple life. Love changes him, then dejection, then humiliation , then poor sections of society and finally he attends wisdom. The movie will also be remembered for its melodious songs and meaningful lyrics.Hats Off to Anand Brothers.
the_rainmaker25 i presume that brian is not an Indian national or speaks Indian languages. his take on this movies is quite accurate. he has described it in perfect words. i congratulate him because it isn't easy for an American to understand the intricate details of a foreign film.also it is my all time fav movies by far ( Indian movie i.e.). a classical musical fest. brilliantly directed acted and edited. dev anand who is producer of this movies changed the end of the movie. in the novel Raju gets back with rosie and takes his mother and rosie to new town to start fresh life. but dev thought that a happy ending doesn't suit this story and decided to stick with mentality of Raju after getting out of jail. notably, i have read few other articles posted by fellow indians, which seem to have wrong interpretation of this movie. i at least saw 2 points, 1. they mention that Raju who is a guide on one hand and con-man on other. he is not depicted as con-man in the movie the only con he pulls is he forges a signature, that too to keep Rosie away from her ex husband who is trying to get back to her now that she is rich and famous. 2nd thing they say after getting out of the jail Raju goes in search of Rosie, wrong again !! he doesn't have to search for rosie if he wants to ! he decides to leave his past behind and start a new life, to search his soul, but now has no money and no goal and just wanders around. this is where the movies starts and during the titles, there is beautiful soulful song perfectly timed. this is the beauty of the movie. unlike other Hindi movies where a special situation is created for songs and songs rather seem pushed into movies. the songs in guide come with a flow and become part of the story.again brain u really have expressed the true heart of this movie. great work sir !
purnendup Its an Iconic Hindi movie of all time. Dev Anand, Vijay Anand & Wahida Rehman at their Summit. For me, Guide will always spot at the Top of all the Hindi Movies ever filmed. It is without any doubt coined as the most famous Indian Musical Movie of all the Times.Every inch of Movie reel is a class act & it rolls before your eyes with a heart pounding and moving Title song. All the songs are pegged as all time great. Wahida Rehman is the most gorgeous actor i have ever seen in Hindi cinema & she gave a tough fight for Beauty goddess Madhubala.to sum up GUIDE is worth a TREAT.
