Vonia Guzaarish (2010) (Urdu, meaning Request) Director: Sanjay Leela Bhansali Watched: 8/2/18 Rating: 7/10 Ornate costumes/sets, Magical realism aced- Stunning visual treat. Mixed acting merit- Compelling but overdone; Works for song/dance acts. Too long/clashing themes- Drama/laughs/musical? Comedic slant fails. Deft narrative shows Both sides to euthanasia- But "Hinglish" hinders. Less than the sum of its parts, But plus dazzling magic shows! Haiku Sonnets are comprised of 4 3-line haiku plus a couplet of either 5 or 7 syllables, adding up to 14 lines, the same number of lines found in a sonnet. (5-7-5, 5-7-5, 5-7-5, 5-7-5, 7-7/5-5) Notes: Bhansali has been accused of borrowing or even plagiarizing from the unpublished novel "Summer Snow" (by Indian writer Dayanand Rajan) and the films "The Prestige" and "Mar Adentro". I personally agree with this last one; having noticed similarities that are almost eerie, making it difficult to believe that it is coincidental. "Mar Adentro" ("The Sea Inside") is a 2004 Spanish film starring Javier Bardem. A far superior film for a multitude of reasons, I highly recommended it as an alternative. #HaikuSonnet #PoemReview #Controversy #Euthanasia #Indian #MagicalRealism #Magician #Quadriplegic
gulfisaforever In a single word, its intolerable.I don't care if the movie promotes/opposes euthanasia, or even if its ambivalent towards the subject. Its really OK with me.So the film doesn't have any action, any comedy, any item numbers, any typical bollywood stuff.? OK great. No problem. Obviously I didn't expect any of that stuff in Guzarish. We do know that much. What I do need is a solid story. But alas, the film has nothing to offer in this department. We already knew from the trailers, what the movie was going to be about. What I was looking forward to was some brilliance, creativity in the narrative. The only creativity you find here is Aishwarya donning weird Gothic style make up that makes her look hideous, and ghostly, vampirish actually(May be they edited out the scene where she was secretly sucking off Hrithik's blood at the last minute), and the huge palatial mansion that Hrithik inhabits. Though its a villa, a grand mansion by architecture and design, it functions more like a lodging and boarding house, where random people come and go as per their requirements. This film is in reality a great insult to all the people suffering from disability. Mr. Bhansali, get real please. Living in a palace, and being attended to, by nurses who were former Ms Worlds, really?
blackrose1109 Honestly, I got really disappointed in this movie, specially after the trailers that I watched before the full version, the screenplay and the customs were very attractive. yet, it didn't get long in watching the movie to fell into deep satisfaction and even dismay. Even though the story line and the idea of the movie pretty powerful and dramatic, it still looks that the director for unknown reason for me failed to deliver it. without enough events into the flow of the movie, the gaps between the scenes get wider and more obvious, it's as if we're watching the unfinished version of the movie because of the abrupt cutting of the scenes. the argumentation of the cause were very primitive and pathetically emotional, GOD! I've never seen an advocate could got emotional as Mr Mascarenhas's had been, this week spot made the whole show fall apart. Guzarrish is like a work that we'd like very much to submit it but we can't digest it because it is put on sheer raw materials. there's too another thing, I 'd understand the time-place context, it was quit confusing and the one can't get to the bottom of it; we have English places and sites, Spanish custom "Sofia D'Souza", and Indian constitution and population... what's really all of that is about. We're not trying to be measure with traditional movies criteria, we can definitely accept the fantasy drama section, but this movie even though it tried really hard to show some aspect of this approach, it got very disturbed with it.
MovieInspector Back in 1999, Sanjay Leela Bhansali released "Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam", a high profile movie which did impress. Three years later, he released a very high profile multi-starrer "Devdas", which was also very good, and continued with "Black" 3 years later which was also very impressive. Two years after that, he released "Saawariya" which was very disappointing, though he did give the industry another rising star in the form of Ranbir Kapoor. We've had to wait 3 years for this one. One thing's for sure: he has absolutely nailed this one. Brilliant!Hrithik Roshan plays the role of a quadriplegic effortlessly; everything from his facial expressions to his dialogue delivery is just superb. He reminds us how underrated he is as an actor. Aishwariya is superb in her respective role too. Aditya Roy Kapoor really caught my eye; he's someone to look out for in the future. Shernaz Patel and Suhel Seth are good in their supporting roles too.The cinematography is great; the screenplay is great and the direction is brilliant. Sanjay Leela Bhansali's talent shines through in every single frame of the movie. The music of the film is quite appropriate and has been nicely incorporated into the narrative. "Sau gram zindagi" is easily the best track.Verdict: a masterpiece from a brilliant director. Hrithik shines as does Aishwariya. A romantic and profound drama that shouldn't be missed! I give it 9.5/10
