Chris_Mac_25 Imagine a film executive looking at the Lethal Weapon duo of Mel Gibson and Danny Glover and saying 'Let's copy that formula, except make it suck.' Seagal is fat and tired and is too old for this shit, Ja Rule tries to look menacing and crazy eyed but just looks and sounds stupid. What happened Steven?
eric262003 By the time the 1990's rolled around, the action star Steven Seagal's career was plummeting very badly. It wasn't until 2001 when producer Joel Silver took the fallen action star and made him perform as the ageing aikido champion in the fast-paced action film "Exit Wounds".In 2002 after almost fading out into obscurity, Seagal now about 30-50 pounds bloated goes out and makes "Half Past Dead" a shooter film that was also in conjunction with another film titled "The Foreigner". Sure Seagal is no Laurence Olivier by a long-shot, And when you go see a Seagal film, you're not expecting any Oscar winning performances (Razzies maybe). Seagal does his routine shtick as the the tough guy action hero kicking bad guys here, there and everywhere while donning a cheesy looking ponytail, using his stoic voice to deliver unintentionally laughable dialogue and seems to have an eternally structured dark life and his fondness for practising Buddhism. I guess that about covers what to expect in a Steven Seagal movie.I have a problem with the rating being that it's PG-13. I mean to walk into a Steven Seagal movie, you're expecting to see a plethora of shootouts and lots of people getting brutally murdered. If you're expecting high-class drama, then you're barking up the wrong tree. Also everyone is expecting to have a very confusing story that doesn't necessarily have to be mind-boggling. All the props come into play like the incognito cop, a resourceful antagonist, a prison revolt, an inmate with a hidden past, lots of bullets and bloodshed and finally rap music (very loud rap music which sadly had all the swear words expunged) I could tell you in detail about the story, but why bother? And of course every painful cliché pays a visit to this mindless tripe. The bad guys are sporting black woollen hats while people are carrying two guns as they fire off in slow motion. It's tiring after a while and then followers like John Woo and other directors try to follow this pattern by trying to come up the same formula into creating of all things, a story. All I can say is that Seagal is showing signs of ageing and not very gracefully either as continues to bloat. You can see that he's not doing his own stunts. And the fight scenes are poorly choreographed. And he was never really much of an actor during his film career, what makes you think "Half Past Dead" is one of his better performances? "Half Past Dead" scored very low at the box office you often wonder why "The Foreigner" which was supposed to get a theatrical release was only demoted to being made straight to DVD. Ja Rule should just stick to rap and hip-hop music because he fails to impress as a gangster who teaches Seagal to use the the term "Aight" (a combination of the words "all right) which kind of made me want to walk out of the theatre with a bag over my face. I have never been so embarrassed in my life. The worst thing is that the reason "The Foreigner" went straight to DVD was partly due to the failure of "Half Past Dead". at the box office. But the thing is "The Foreigner" was a way better movie. Sure "The Foreigner" was awful too, but at least it was honest about it. It was rated-R and it had enough lame violence and pivotal locations for it to pass off as entertainment. The only real good quality of "Half Past Dead" is the extras thrown in. But I still wouldn't recommend it..Edit Delete .
disdressed12 you know,i actually enjoyed this movie.really had a blast.it may be full of plot holes and illogical moments, but i never really thought about it.it was fast paced and fun.lots of action,a few fight scenes that were adequate, not great but not horrible.lots of gun battles.there were some funny moment, some of which might have been unintentional, but some were intentional.i don't think this was trying too hard to be a serious movie.sometimes you just need to shut off your brain for awhile and allow yourself to be entertained.but you have to been in the mood.if you're not,you won't enjoy it.luckily i was.for 95 minutes or so,i forgot about everything else and enjoyed the ride.for me,Half Past Dead is a 7/10
Sandcooler So there's Steven Seagal, and there's a bunch of people that want to kill him because well, just because. There have been so many movies with that exact premise I wonder why I still bother to watch them. I guess it's just that the pure, innocent simplicity to a Seagal movie is very endearing to me. With that said, this movie still kinda blows. I'm okay with the dumb plot about criminals trying to locate 200 million dollars worth of gold (which apparently is just around twenty bars), but I expected some more real action from our main character. All Seagal does is slap some people, and even that is usually done by an obvious double. His acting is also even worse than usual (is that possible?) and his co-stars don't exactly carry the movie either. Maybe because most of them aren't even real actors. Whose idea was it to put Seagal and Ja Rule in an emotional climax? Whoever it was, he's cleaning up aisle three right now. Occasionally there's a good gunfight thrown in the mix, so the movie's not boring all the way through, but it is in fact pretty disappointing.
