I saw this film for Gaspard Ulliel. and it is far to be a disappointment. in same measure, it is a reasonable and decent explanation for the beginning of Hannibal Lecter story. and, not the last, it is an interesting challenge for the viewer. I see it as an autonomous part. it gives explanations but it is not in competition with the other parts of series. because it reminds a form of Romanticism , near to the dark horror stories, who gives to it force and special characteristics. story of survive and revenge, using, like the novel, crumbs from the XX century cruel history, it is one of films defined by a form of flavor who resurrect an entire page of the recent past.the sin- maybe the dialogues. and the impression of sketches for the characters. but, it is a decent film. and this could be the only significant thing.

... Firt off, never ever "not" watch a movie because, of ratings. So many times I have found delight in movies that I passed up because of other people. This will be the review you want. This movie got bad ratings because, of acting, drawn out, and because, people felt a classic should not have a prequel..Sorry, they could not be more than wrong about this. This movie has that grotesque "it" factor that any Hannibal movie goer dreams of. Not only that it has war, blood, guts, tells the story in a GREAT pace! You could not ask for a better prequel. The acting that Gaspard Ulliel shows off is one in a million. Just like rain man their could not be a better person to do this film. He is a psychopath, of course he is going to act weird and disturbed. From the opening to the constant nightmares, to the drug induced dreams to over come his flashbacks, and to the revenge of deaths at the hand of a mastermind. Its simply fantastic pace. The dirty grim-my Germany and France scenes are Amazing coming from an American with such movies as Saving Private Ryan or Apocalypse Now... Think of this movie as a war ridden "NO MANS LAND" with a touch of intellectual landscape. Each scene has its stay and not one feels like it is out of touch. The music is rich with the original silence of the lambs and fits again with the landscape of post war living. .. Watch. This. Movie! I cannot say much more about that. Have fun and remember movies are a way for us to escape to be someone we are not just for a few minutes of our lives. Enjoy 9/10 stars!

The movie presents the life of the young Hannibal Lecter which is passing through difficult moments, being witness to the murder of his family during World War II. The movie is an action from the beginning till the end, in which Hannibal seeks the revenge for the death of his family. The character of the Hannibal it is played by Gaspard Ulliel that makes an exceptional role. The way that its family is murdered, puts its mark on the way that Hannibal acts. He is become more furious, he calculates every move and most of all, he is discovering his instinct and pleasure to kill. "Hannibal Rising" it's a very good movie because it is not necessary to read the book or to see the previous movie to understand the story. Still, it's something that I would have liked to see more in this film: the deaths of the men should've been more gruesome and painful than the average kill to show how twisted Hannibal was and how badly he wanted them to pay for devouring a small child without remorse. Overall, it's one of the best movies I've seen lately...and Gaspard was really good in this movie!

This film is a prequel to "Silence of the Lambs" and seeks to tell how the young Hannibal Lecter, affected by the dramatic events of World War II, became a dangerous cannibal. Directed by Peter Webber and written by Thomas Harris, this film has a cast headed by Gaspard Ulliel, Gong Li and Rhys Ifans.This film is not bad, but its too far from the success and quality of "Red Dragon" and "Silence of the Lambs". It cannot be analyzed as a horror film because never frightens us. Its closer to the thriller or police movies.It has a dubious script, which explains the reasons why Hannibal is what he is in previous films. This is its first problem: it want to transform a perfect villain in a dubious antihero. The idea simply does not stick with anything that the character will do in the movies played by Anthony Hopkins. The idea of inserting Japanese elements in the story also seems a wrong option, something that does not fit properly, despite the good acting of Li Gong.In fact, speaking of actors, she seemed to me the best performance of the film, discreet and elegant as called for her character. The actors who played the villains was reasonable. Gaspard Ulliel, in the leading role, is a casting error: although he managed to give its character lots of coldness and cynicism, he wasn't able to give it charisma and sense of taste, striking personality traits of Lecter that are quite visible in Hopkins movies.The film contains several intense action scenes with moments that may hurt some people's sensibilities, so be warned. Still, its far from violence and gore visible in "Hannibal". Its a film that focuses on action and romance, not on blood. The special, visual and sound effects are good and get better as we approach the end. The soundtrack seemed to be regular, fulfilling its role without stand.
