aech-02177 A24 is an amazing film company that has released some of the best indie films in years, but they don't always stick the landing. Such is the case for Life After Beth. Zach (Dane DeHaan) is heartbroken after his girlfriend Beth (the lovely Aubrey Plaza) dies as the result of a snake bite. Some time later, she has inexplicably come back to life, and her parents (John C. Reilly and Molly Shannon) are trying to hide her from the outside world. As Zach tries to do everything he didn't do when Beth was still "alive", he notices that she has become more irritable, hyperactive and even more possessive of him. Could she be a zombie? Life After Beth tries to be a romantic comedy and a zombie horror flick and fails at both. The writing is bland, with a premise that at first seems like a good opportunity to be a deconstruction of the zombie movie flick, but it wears off quickly. The characters are beyond annoying. There is always two, three or more people yelling at each other about something. The film never thinks to slow down or take a break. I didn't laugh once. I don't think the movie even tried to be funny, and it just got more depressing as it went on. The acting is passable, but it is Aubrey Plaza who stands out the most. You can tell she believed in this story, and her manic energy was what kept me watching. In the end, Life After Beth just didn't do it for me, and at this point the zombie genre is barely breathing.
bjhmelton What a waste of time. The acting is robotic and labored and the story has too many holes. It is never explained why things are happening and sub plots are left in limbo. Like the argument with the previous home owners whom are now zombies too. It also begs belief that her parents would not want to have the reasons for her return investigated by medical or even religious authority. If this is the only thing you have got to watch then I would suggest you just go for a walk instead. It would be a better way to spend the time. And through the whole movie, no one seems to discover the empty grave(s) which one would assume has a dirty great hole in the ground where she (and others) must have climbed out. It could have been a better movie, but I got the impression that it was made under some fairly tight time and budget constraints. It is barely a comedy and there certainly is no romance. 'Mystery' is a more appropriate genre.
leonblackwood Review: This film is really weird! It's about two teenagers who really love each other but the girl dies from a mysterious snake bite and the boy feels like he can't survive without her. His only way of dealing with the his lose is by going to the dead girls parents house, only to find out that the girl is still alive and still very much in love with him. After a while the girls mood starts to change and she becomes very violent which makes the boy question who she really is. I quite enjoyed the beginning of the movie but then it gets a bit out of hand when the zombies start turning up in there community. The storyline kind of dries up and reaches a dead end after a while, which is a shame because the concept wasn't bad. I honestly think that it would have been a better movie if it was a straight out comedy without the deep love element. The guy who played the lead was a bad choice because he seemed to take the whole situation seriously, even when she is walking around with a cooker on her back whilst listening to smooth jazz. John C. Reilly and Molly Shannon were a great choice as the parents because they are veterans in this genre but I personally was hoping for more laughs. Average!Round-Up: Dane DeHaan has only been on the scene since 2003 and he has had major roles in the Amazing Spiderman 2, Lincoln and Lawless, which isn't bad for the young looking 29 year old. He doesn't have the most noticeable style of acting but he has a unique look which has worked in his roles. Personally I think that this movie could have done with a comedic actor like Seth Rogen or Jonah Hill but thats just my personal opinion. Aubrey Plaza, whose starred in movies like Scott Pilgrim, Funny People and 10 Years, was a great choice for her role because of her striking dark looks and big eyes which worked as the scary girlfriend. The main problem for me was the far fetched storyline was a bit weak and it needed the Shaun of the Dead, Simon Pegg touch.Budget: $2.4million Worldwide Gross: $250,000 (Terrible!)I recommend this movie to people who are into their romance/comedy/horror movies about a boy who has to deal with the lose of his girlfriend who suddenly comes back as a zombie. 3/10
jeffreyhillen-364-945381 Life After Beth is a Comedy/ Drama/Horror film about Zach Orfman ( Dane Dehaan) who just lost his girlfriend Beth (Aubrey Plaza) . He spends a lot of time at Beth's parent and finds it difficult to accept that Beth isn't alive anymore. But when all of a sudden the parents don't answer the phone anymore and don't let Zach in anymore he is starting get frustrated. He keeps coming and suddenly sees Beth walking in the house. That leaves Zach with a lot of questions and Beth's father is letting him now ad tries to explain. Beth has been resurrected but she can't know, Zach must find a way to deal with this. And tries to solve the problem. While this film is mainly meant as a Comedy there are also so much emotional scenes included. The scenes between Dane Dehaan and Aubrey Plaza are amazing. They deliver an fantastic job and give a great performance which helps the audience help to understand their characters. The scenes between them are very funny and they bring that over fantastic. Further casting deliver an acceptable job doing their role but Dane Dehaan and Aubrey Plaza deliver definitely the best performance.I think this script has been written really great. There are some romantically moment, some Dramatic moments for the main character, but also there are lots of Comedy moments. The story has been written beautifully and the characters are developed on screen really great. The thing about the film which I disliked was when more Zombies came you really didn't see them doing anything particular. There were no moments of action scenes, you didn't see them attack. And it took really long before they suddenly knew how to kill them. You, also, never saw them find out how to kill a Zombie, they just suddenly knew. While there was a moment in the film were Zach had to visit someone finding out what happened. But he never heard how to kill them, they never explained how to kill it- they just suddenly knew. Also I wasn't happy with the ending because Zach should never be able to love someone so soon already. Because he still loved Beth so much.Rating this film was quite difficult but I think give the rating : 6/10. Dane dehaan and Aubrey Plaza's performance helped to make this film great to watch. The comedy moments were also really funny but there were a few things which I disliked about the film. And that was all the reason for this rating.
