Sandcooler "Monster A Go-Go" was supposed to be the first feature film for Bill Rebane, who started filming this thing in 1961. His monster flick, originally called "Terror At Halfday", had a budget of 80.000 dollars, which was pretty much gone after a couple of days of filming. After he ran out of funding the film lay on the shelf for about four years, unfinished and with no hope (or desire) of actually being released.Cue Herschell Gordon Lewis (of "Blood Feast" fame), always on the look-out for the cheapest way he could get a film released. So he bought the abandoned footage from "Terror At Halfday" and 'finished' the movie. To cut costs, he decided to only ask a couple of performers back, which did not include Henry Hite. I should point out Henry Hite played the monster. He finished this monster flick ... without the monster. That's one of the main reasons why this movie feels like such a blatantly cynical cash grab.So Lewis only had a tiny little bit of footage shot with Henry Hite, and none of that footage could be edited to look like an actual ending. Lewis 'solved' that problem by creating one of the saddest anti-climaxes in the history of filmmaking. I honestly can't imagine how the people that paid to see this left the theatre after this screening. To quote Rich Hall: "It was so bad I wanted everyone's money back!". That was about a Bob Dylan concert, but it works equally well for this movie. For what it's worth: Rebane actually did try to shoot a big climax for this, that's actually the main reason the budget ran out so quickly. Some of the ending scenes feature dozens of extras, so that's clearly Rebane's footage. Lewis really wouldn't bother to do any of that. In later interviews Rebane has stated he hates this movie even more than the audience does, and I can't blame him. Lewis didn't even put his name on it, Rebane is the only credited director. Did I mention he only sold his "Terror At Halfday" footage for 8.000 dollars, while it cost ten times as much to film? I guess he got a really quick course on how film business worked.
shawnblackman This one is the king of cheese. I think Mystery Science Theater 3000 did this one so I'm probably the only one who hasn't seen it. Personally I can't stand commentary when I'm watching a movie. When you go to a movie you want to punch the guy who won't stop talking during it. Then some people pay money to have a guy and some robots talk and crack jokes all through a film. Makes no sense to me. This film however has a radioactive monster running around the city freaking people out. This one though takes the cake for all time so bad its good. One scene has a man sitting at the desk waiting for a call. They have to use a crew member to make the sound of a phone ringing with his mouth. You really can't describe how bad this thing is but the opening tune is pretty cool.
Colin Thecoyote This is, without question, the worst film I have ever seen. It's not even enjoyable in the cheesy B&W B-horror sense that most MST3k fodder is. Like, I despised Spring Breakers. Kairo was so boring it angered me. But I still gave those films two stars because *at least they aren't Monster a-Go Go*. This film is just completely worthless on every conceivable level. And then it has the worst "oh crap, we ran out of money" ending in the history of filmmaking. Just... do not watch. Do not even watch ironically. If you must watch, watch the MST3k episode. The only other film I would call anywhere near this worthless is Manos: The Hands of Fate, but at least that one seemed *finished*.
Anders Twetman This movie is supposedly about some kind of monster but I had some real trouble seeing one, perhaps it was because i kept nodding off from boredom, but I did watch several scenes more than one to make sure I did not miss anything. The point is, in a feature length film about a monster, the monster only appears for about a minute or so, the rest is mostly just the narrator telling us about the monster. As for the a-go go part, that might just have been the more or less random dance scene, or the thirty seconds of bikini girls, the monster itself never did anything remotely a-go go.Fact of the matter is, very little happens in this mind numbingly boring, inaptly named movie. Just people talking about stuff, an narrator babbling on in the background.
