SnoopyStyle It's 1899 New York City. Titans like Joseph Pulitzer (Robert Duvall) and William Randolph Hearst control information and the news. Jack Kelly (Christian Bale) is a street-smart leader of the newsies, boys who hawk papers on the streets. David Jacobs (David Moscow) and his younger brother are new to the trade. When the papers' price is raised, the boys decide to strike. Bryan Denton (Bill Pullman) is a sympathetic reporter. Snyder (Kevin Tighe) is the corrupt warden of the Refuge orphanage. This is a Disney song and dance musical. That's not really the best part unless you're a fan of the genre. This has Bale as a compelling young actor. He has the power to drive this film. It reminds of Annie but not as fun or as compelling. None of the songs are memorable but it has its appeal.
herreras-39978 Personally, I never really enjoy musicals, so when I first heard of the 1992 hit film, Newsies, I was not sure if I would enjoy it or if it would even hold my interest. However, I was extremely surprised with the two hour hit Disney musical movie. It captivated me and brought me back to the times when Newsies hurried along the streets selling papers. Christian Bale, David Moscow and Luke Edwards are entertaining and lively actors as they portray the life and struggles that Newsies faced. When the Newsies find out that the price of papers have gone up, they organize themselves into a ragtag Union, with David Jacobs (Moscow) as the brains behind the voice of Jack Kelly (Bales). From then on it is a series of adventures and impatience as you await the Newsies next move. The singing and dancing is always upbeat and enthralling. I found myself singing along to the catchy songs as I watched brilliant character development unfold before my eyes. I would definitely recommend this film to view not only for the entertainment, but also for the history. The musical masterpiece put into movie form is an uplifting and accurate tale of Newsie life from a young perspective with lots of emotion, humor and enjoyment
putnamo Newsies is a Disney produced film/musical about journalism and child labor in the late 1900's. Directed by Kenny Ortega, the film was released in 1992. We set the scene in the streets of New York City in the year 1899, where teenage boys work as newsies for some of the richest men in New York City, such as Joseph Pulitzer. When the price is raised to purchase newspapers to sell, the newsies go on strike. The leader of this strike is Jack Kelley who is played by Christian Bale. Bale delivers impeccable acting and stole the show. Other important characters include David Jacobs (David Moscow) and Les Jacobs (Luke Edwards). The film includes a surplus of dances, which were choreographed to perfection. The choreographers used the sets to their advantage and strategically created dances to fit the song perfectly. The boys looked professional and together in each dance. The songs you ask? I cannot get them out of my head. Their angelic voices have changed my life and I am forever grateful to have heard such beautiful fake accents singing as one. Overall, this movie is a family movie with a feel good ending. If you are looking for a fun, partly historical film to enjoy, I recommend Newsies. Either some facts were not included or fictional in this film but still it delivers a sense of what was happening during the yellow journalism era.
kellenk-61694 1992 Musical is a Must SeeA 1992 musical starring young, fiery boys ready to take on the world is here to stay. Newsies, a Disney movie directed by Kenny Ortega, has been out for more than 20 years and is still watched by many. The movie surrounds the real story of young boys in New York who sell newspaper for a living. It touches on the harsh reality of the lives of boys at this time. The movie goes on to show the progress of these boy's strike against the newspaper companies. The movie very closely follows the historical events of the time, which makes it more informative, but also interesting to watch. Newsies amazing success is due in part to the cast. Characters such as Jack Kelly, played by Christian Bale, and David, played by David Moscow, made the show thrilling and lovable. Actor Robert Duvall, who played Pulitzer, seemed to lack character and passion. Although Duvall's character dragged, the overall effect was amazing. Another strong point through the musical was the dancing and singing. The choreography was spectacular and added a deeper level to the movie. In my opinion on Newsies is that is is a lovable, family friendly movie that is a must see for all. I would give this movie 4 ½ stars out of 5 and recommend that you go see it as soon as you can.
