Beren ...This critique does contain spoilers...I wouldn't go so far as to say that this movie was a total failure, but it was pretty bad. Following in the footsteps of films like Groove, which to one degree or another focuses on rave culture, recreational drug use and dance music, this movie had the potential to go above and beyond the stereotypical counterculture film because it takes a much different angle. Creating music out of real-life sounds and rhythms is by no means new, but it is a fairly unique idea and the actual composition of electronic music is not something any other film in this genre has really examined (at least from what I've seen). The cinematography is pretty good, the acting isn't horrible and the plot is interesting. Unfortunately this movie is so focused on mixing drama and emotionally-charged plot twists into the formula that it loses touch with the message it is trying to provide; or, at least, the message is overshadowed by the writers trying too hard to make the movie dramatic and it falls flat on its face. What's sad is the plot could have been much more coherent and resonating if only a few bad choices weren't made. For one thing, how did Tommy go from never having mixed live electronic music to being some kind of DJ prodigy in the course of a few days or weeks? I'm sorry, but it just doesn't work that way, even with previous music experience (I know a couple of DJ's who took years to get to that point). Two: what is the point of having the sister and the girlfriend die (and possibly the third death of the sister's unborn baby)? This is hyperbolized, soap opera nonsense. The love triangle thing with the drug dealer guy – also pretty dumb. Three: how is Tommy even capable of functioning after these two (or three) supposedly significant deaths let alone able to get up on stage and spin an awesome music set for the second time in his life? Of course, that's not all that's wrong with this movie and I would go into more detail, but I just don't feel like writing a thesis on plot trajectory vs. theme and character development and all that nonsense. Bottom line: it's somewhat entertaining, but nothing extraordinary like some people here seem to think.
wrlang One Perfect Day is about a small group of young people whose lives all meet within the art of sounds and visions. As an old disco-holic that stopped looking for driving dance beats after the dullards killed disco in the late 70s I fell out of the music scene and traded my cars woofers, midranges, and tweeters for a minivan and bringing up kids. I caught up just recently with trance and dance music and fell in love all over again. Swing, big band, disco, dance, trance. Other music is nice, but… Back to the movie. Lives are made and lost as drugs and bad decisions from immature people mix in a deadly cocktail that devastates the characters on the dance club scene. In the end, what's left of the good guys win and bring some wonderful sensory sugar to everyone. The casting was excellent as was the sound track, plot, dialog, and cinematography. This goes to show you that excellent movies and excellent actors aren't necessarily made in Hollywood USA. Bravo!!
mbenninger I saw this when I lived in Melnourne from 2002-3.We say it on opening might in Melbourne and while it is not "The Castle" or "The Dish", it's still not a bad movie, especially if you like the music and the whole rave music vibe. What it also does is prove the high quality of Aussie film-making for such a relatively small population. In fact, if they had made it a 1 hour movie with a bit of plot and all the music scenes, that would have been good enough for me to still pay to see it on the big screen. I bought the sound track and unfortunately they took some liberties on what was in the movie and what is in the soundtrack. That's really too bad as lots of the movie scenes are not on the soundtrack but in the movie and some of them are very good. I was hoping for a better sound track compared to the movie, but hey, it might be a good rental if you're into the music...
Rhys (DrBugSmith) O.K, this is no cinematic great but firstly (I know this may be hard for some mainstream Americans) but you have to compare this movie to other Australian productions. In other words firstly ignore the buckets of trash we're exposed to from our movie industry.. And compare with standout exceptions like e.g Lantana,Goddess of 1967', etc. This movie I can say did captivate me emotionally, aurally and visually. Didn't sit well with the main character sister's drug death, needed greater depth and perception in reality. I really didn't know anything about the film before I sat down (except dance music) so I was surprised by the level of dramatic elements in it.. Quite possibly "Go" dulled my radar??? A overly fun film this isn't but hey I'm proud of this particular level of achievement for an Aussie film.
