jrmcveigh Oranges and Sunshine (film) & Anne Hamilton-Byrne (Messiah) ...a correlation ???There appears to me ...a correlation with the events in this film and the cult of & Anne Hamilton-Byrne. Anne Hamilton-Byrne She (Anne) gathered young boys and girls and raised them as her own on a property in Lake Eildon in central Victoria. Some children were obtained through questionable adoptions, others were born to cult members and some were even handed over by compliant sect parents. The identically dressed children, with bleached blonde hair shaped into the same bob, were allegedly bashed, starved and injected with LSD by Hamilton-Byrne and other cult leaders in terrifying sect initiation rituals. Oranges and Sunshine Set in 1980s Nottingham, social worker Margaret Humphreys holds the British government accountable for child migration schemes and reunites the children involved -- now adults living mostly in Australia -- with their parents in Britain.
ambertrower27 A gripping film, which tells a story of child migrants deported from the UK to Australia. Margaret, the film's heroine reunites estranged families and brings worldwide attention to the cause. The fact that the story was based on true events from the 1980s, with graphic tales of child abuse and social injustice, leaves me with a rather raw sense of disgust. Whilst the film is brilliant, I didn't actually enjoy watching it. It is the type of film that makes you think about all the wrongs in this world. But perhaps that is what makes it so brilliant. Worth a watch, but don't say I didn't warn you.
paul2001sw-1 In the years after World War Two, the British government took away children from single mothers considered unsuited for parenthood, told them they were orphans, and sent them to Australia, where they were raised as virtual slave labour by the Catholic church. This shocking but true story is revealed in Jim Loach's workmanlike film 'Oranges and Sunshine', which follows the British social worker who discovered and revealed their plight. The film is interesting because of the awfulness of the tale it reveals; but the story of its protagonist is not so interesting in itself, and indeed, the drama itself makes the point that her story is less interesting than those of the people she helped which, by contrast, are revealed only through retrospection. It's still worth watching as a reminder of the terrible things that are sometimes done supposedly in a good cause.
mtsoundrecording-580-886190 This was what I call real Filmmaking.A revealing of yet another travesty of power and abuse told through sensitive portrayal understated brilliant performance shots held and always a good sense of place. My experience is that these are the foundation that together form the seamless art of story telling. In thirty years of drama and docs it reminded me of an interview with a Lancashire lady who for the first time ever sat down in her own front room and poured out the story of how in the sixties she had a baby girl and as she was unmarried and her dad was a pillar of the local community another institution was invited in .This was the "mother and baby Homes" staffed by nuns ,were single mums stayed out of sight until the little one could be passed on ,these were active until the early seventies. She broke down after the interview but the good thing was her daughter having reached 18 did seek her out and moved back near by. Oranges and sunshine didn't follow the documentary or visa versa but sealed the highly emotional topic beautifully..
