hoytyhoyty This film deserves a lot of praise just for effort alone. It delivers EXACTLY what it says on the tin, and is a lot of fun. What more could you ask?The setup is great, and the location is perfect. They get a lot of mileage and suspense out of a near-empty field and some gloomy corridors. The performances are good all-round, and the characters are drawn with enough depth that you care when something happens to them.Apart from that, the plot is silly silly silly - but it's a horror film, I really don't think that's going to put anyone off. Also at least the plot provides for some quite creepy situations, especially in the lead-up when you don't know what is happening.I have one major criticism and it will probably attract ghouls rather than repel anyone - it resorts to torture-porn, briefly, in a couple of places. They weren't enough to wreck the film, but after most of the film is dark-house-spooky it was a bit much. And finally: as has probably been mentioned by other critics, fans of a certain FPS computer game series (I am one) will almost certainly get a kick out of this film!Verdict: Silly, has its faults, but very well executed and quite enjoyable.
bowmanblue Okay, so 'perfect' is probably not a term that should be used to describe a film about ghost-Nazis stalking a team of mercenaries in the wastelands of Eastern Europe, but, for what it is, 'Outpost' is a pretty damn good film.Hopefully, if you've fully digested my first paragraph about the ghost-Nazis (or zombie-Nazis – take your pick) you won't be expecting a deep and intellectual film, filled with emotional depth and fulfilling character arcs and plot twists. So, if you're looking for a damn tense (and pretty creepy) little story, with decent action scenes and characters you may actually care about, then try this.Outpost is a B-movie. It never really tries to be anything else. It doesn't have much of a budget, but what it does have it uses well. So, if you like your action/war/horror movies short and to the point, you really could do worse than to watch Outpost (just don't get it confused with any of the – very inferior – sequels!http://thewrongtreemoviereviews.blogspot.co.uk/
homemdometal This movie starts off in a not-so-bad way. But then it proceeds to drag itself. It wastes time with needless junk. Waste of tape. The first half hour of the movie could be summarized, faster and more entertaining. Instead it just shows(...) ***SPOILER ALERT!*** (...)a bunch of mercenaries inside a bunker with their contractor. They find a pile of dead men in a room, the machine the contractor was looking for...that's about it. And this is done in very boring way: like a 13 year-old presenting a powerpoint. ***END OF SPOILER***After that half hour I tried to watch more ten minutes but it was impossible, my interest was dead. For a movie that is in the categories of Action, Horror and Sci-Fi there isn't any or very little of that. "OH MY GAWD! IT'S DARK! AHH!"***SPOILER ALERT!*** And those mercenaries are very bad at what they do. Since the bunker is in a location that is a "tactical nightmare" they stand guard right outside of it? Genius. (Why would a bunker be in such a location in the first place? But I can tolerate that.) And shooting blindly must be a requirement, I bet they're children will be stormtroopers someday. I guess hidding one or two MoFos outside to guard/scout/surveil the area is a bad idea after all. Totally wouldn't work. ***END OF SPOILER***
DaveCooper I must be honest, this film is pretty average. It's remarkably similar in story to the superior 'Bunker' that dealt with the same subject matter in a far better way. It seems to me as though there has been a fair amount left on the cutting room floor, which has lead to some plot holes and character inconsistencies. We find ourselves in the company of the usual mix of merc toughguys, none of which are particularly well developed. Only Ray Stevenson's character which is paper thin elicits any feelings of sympathy from the audience - and even with him, we are given very little to go on. The actors all commit 100% to their parts though, with varying levels of success. Richard Brake is good as Stevenson's redneck right hand man, but some of the other accents might leave you grinning for the wrong reasons. Im not exactly sure where Brett Fancy's Taktarov is meant to be from, but he along with Enoch Frost's woeful African accent certainly jar. There are a few good scares to be had, but in fairness the film is a little slow and doesn't really satisfy as either a horror or an action film. Dog Soldiers handles the brothers in arms versus supernatural enemy's far better, but for some odd reason, i found myself watching this to the end happily enough. The film looked nice and had an decent score, but was let down by underdeveloped writing and a few week performances. All in all though, this is decent fodder for a one time viewing.
