Reviews

Horst in Translation (filmreviews@web.de) This is "Peiru Kokun" or "Pale Cocoon", a Japanese 23-minute animated short film from almost 10 years ago. Writer and director is the fairly well-known Yasuhiro Yoshiura. This is a futuristic science fiction movie and this is generally not a genre I have too much interest in, even if I probably prefer animation from that genre over live action. Still, this one did not really cut the cake for me. Neither the voice acting nor the action in terms of the script left me particularly impressed. The only thing I really liked about this little film here was the animation. There's no denying it is a stunning-looking picture. Unfortunately, this also makes it a case of style over substance as even the most beautiful looks cannot make up for a weak story and this is the case here as well. Not recommended.
Tweekums This short OVA is the first work from director/writer Yasuhiro Yoshiura, the creator of 'Time of Eve'. Like his later work this is beautiful to look at although inevitably there is far less depth of character as it is only twenty three minutes long. Set in the distant future when the Earth's surface has been abandoned following an unspecified catastrophe; Ura works in the "Archive Excavation Department" where he attempts to restore files made before the surface became uninhabitable. Previously many people worked at this but as time past people grew weary of seeing pictures of a beautiful Earth that they themselves would never see. One day Uri is given a file to restore which will lead him to make a startling discovery which will change everybody's perception of their reality.I'd recommend and anime fan check out this short, especially if you like science fiction that doesn't involve space battles or giant robots. The animation looks really beautiful, the story is interesting and there is a nice little twist at the end.
