Sarah C. My father used to own like a gazillion VHS tapes including 1980s and 1990s bad horror/SF/action flicks that seemed like they were meant to scare very young kids but amuse adults. There was one that was particularly upsetting about a baby crocodile pet being flushed down the toilet by an irate bitter redneck dad and later coming back as a mutated monster (the crocodile, not the dad), growling for an Old Testament-type of revenge which, as a child, makes you scared because of the crocodile's "unaesthetic" appearance but, as a cynical misanthropic adult, you cannot help yourself but root for the crocodile because as any child is often told, what goes around comes around (even if it has to crawl out of the creepy sewers). Parasite is one of those flicks I would expect to find among those tapes.Right off the bat things have gotten wacky super fast and with the initial oh-so-spectacular "3D" saloon fight sequence you just know you are in for a treat. Hilariously contrived action sequences, hilarious pacing, acting, hilariously dull dialogues (Character 1: "Duh, don't open the, uh, container with the biohazard logo thingy on it or you'll, uh, die." Character 2: "Ummmm, shut up!" -proceeds to open the container and dies-) is what you can expect from this hysterically amusing old flick.
Lugodoc I don't know how I missed this one when it came out, because I watched a LOT of VHS in the 80s. It's great. Characters fail to pull the trigger and consequently get disarmed on about half a dozen occasions when I would have just shot the muppet (there don't seem to be any police around) but otherwise this is a well-made action/horror/sci-fi thriller set in the outer dusty fringes of a future corporate dystopia with ray guns. The world-building is simple enough but the elements fit together convincingly to frame a story in which an infected fugitive from a world-threatening corporate conspiracy stumbles into sleazy desert-dweller shenanigans.No-one in it was ever heard from again apart from a feisty 20 year old Demi Moore in her third ever film.
meader82 A very cheesy early 80's horror movie, and in 3D no less. I've never seen the 3D version of the film but I honestly don't think it would make watching this any better. The main problem with the movie is that it is quite boring. Demi Moore does a good job here, but she is one of the only actors that is halfway decent. Of course nobody watches these kinds of movies to see good acting anyway, so what about the title creatures? They aren't that good either unfortunately. Stan Winston did the effects for this movie and apart from one or two scenes (especially the saloon owner's demise) it doesn't look like he tried very hard on this one, although the lack of funding probably didn't help either. Overall, I would not suggest this movie to anyone unless they really love cheesy Roger Corman flicks. Really, really cheesy Roger Corman flicks.
DeanBitterman Overall, my first watch through Parasite left a bitter taste in my mouth. It came free with my Fright Pack: Man's Worst Friends, so I decided to sit through it. The plot is tired, and progresses very slowly. In fact an hour into the feature, I looked at the timer and wondered how it would wrap up in the next 30. One major problem was the lack of 3-D effects. As the tagline state "The first futuristic monster movie in 3-D". That being said some of the gore/jump scenes would have been very fun provided the 3-D effects were present. Monsters would pop out from dark spaces and laser beams would whiz over head in a spectacular Friday night movie shocker display. Expect some scenes of bloody violence which are actually pretty entertaining, and would satisfy the inner gore-hound. Seeing Demi Moore in her first ever movie role is fun. My suggestion is watching it as part of the fright pack set, otherwise spend your money elsewhere. Unless you love horrendous B-movies or a penchant to make your own MST3K movies, catch it on TV.
