Reviews

momirko Do not read this review until you have already seen the movie, because there WILL be spoilers.so...Yes, she is cute. And he is charming. And the story goes, and there is the mystery, romance and all... but in the end you see that you have been fooled. Again. First time it was a revelation. Second time you say: OK, it is a little different now, I can buy it. But the third time...it is too much.To be concise, if I ever again see the movie about dead people that do not know they are dead, and need help of other dead people to "move to the other side" (I am not talking about zombie movie...), then it will be awarded with a big one star rating from me. It's cast can all be the Academy Award winners, I don't care. So, The Sixth Sense (1999) - 9 starsThe Others (2001) - 7 starsPassengers (2008) - 3 starsany other similar story recycling - 1 star. And, if by any chance I come upon a movie with the same story dating before 1999. the previous ratings will be revised (you can imagine how).
clrndn6346 I love this movie! it is in the vein of movies like Sixth Sense, The Langoliers, the Last 3 Days and other thriller dramas with a science fiction/supernatural spin. Passenges haunted me. And I love the actors - Patrick Wilson (hopefully you saw him in Angels in America) and Anne Hathaway. But I guess this movie is not for everyone because I was surprised the ratings weren't higher. For me, it ranks at the top. Unfortunately, the new movie titled Passengers (2016) has nothing to do with the 2008 original. I look forward to seeing it, and I hope it's good (I love Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt), but I hate to see the original (already undervalued) be overshadowed by something else with the same name.
TheBlueHairedLawyer Why does this amazing movie have such a low rating? It deserves more than 10/10 stars, but don't watch it expecting something along the lines of Friday the 13th or The Ring because this movie is scary, but not a horror movie (although labeled as such). It reminds me vaguely of The Lovely Bones (2009) and it's just as effective, if not more so.Claire, a grief counselor used to working with children, finds herself waking up to get a phone call from the local hospital. A serious plane crash has occurred down on a beach and very few people survived; Claire's job is not only to help the traumatized victims but also to get to the truth of what happened. Unfortunately Arkin (David Morse) is set on his idea that the pilot made a mistake which caused the accident. Claire also finds herself a little too involved with Erik, a victim of the crash who is surprisingly happy despite the ordeal. The only thing that seems to scare him is the large dog that keeps barking outside his door.As things progress, Claire's patients begin to disappear, all but Erik, which leads her to believe that some sort of conspiracy is going on. The only two people who seem to want to help her aside from Erik, are her boss and her landlady (who later turn out to play a much larger role). Erik sees another man, dressed all in black, who he doesn't recognize. Claire doesn't know what to think anymore until Arkin, looking depressed and extremely guilty, tells her that "the pilot was tired, going through a divorce and leaving the plane in the hands of an inept co-pilot... and as he tearfully leaves, Claire opens the briefcase he has left her and discovers the horrible truth. This movie was beautiful, extremely depressing and sad but still an amazing movie to witness. In fact, it comes across for the first little while as a sappy romance between Eric and Claire, but the story and connections between all the characters is very complex when it all comes together. Eric sees his grandfather (William B. Davis' very brief appearance) and doesn't even recognize him since it was so far back that he died, and the dog outside his door turns out to be not a bad omen, but actually a forgotten friend from childhood. Norman (another victim) believes the airport to be conspiring against the victims in some corporate scandal, but really it's a forgotten relative who has come to help him along. Another victim,Shannon, her dead parents come to find her, and as for Claire, everyone she's seen since the plane crash is her to help her, people she'd forgotten but who made an impact on her life years back.I loved Passengers, it deserves way higher than just a current 5.8/10! With brilliant acting from actors/actresses such as Anne Hathaway (The Cat Returns and Ella Enchanted), Patrick Wilson (Insidious and The Conjuring), David Morse (The Green Mile), William B. Davis (The X-Files, The Killing Moon) and Andre Braugher (The Mist, City of Angels) among other great actors, eerie and beautiful soundtrack and an original plot that really makes you think afterwards unlike most movies these days, Passengers is one I highly recommend and hopefully its ratings will improve.
lathe-of-heaven Painful...Another reviewer here used that word and I truly, TRULY feel that it fits most accurately. I usually scan through the reviews quickly before writing one and USUALLY I roll my eyes and get quite irritated at all the horrible reviews and comments about 'Worst movie', etc., etc... However, in THIS case I honestly had to agree when I saw the detailed comments about how some people here really did not like this film. The reviewer I mentioned, Moristang, stated some good points about the completely unbelievable acting, especially Anne Hathaway's, which is odd since she normally can be quite good. I FULLY agree with his comments about how her awkward, superficially phony nervousness and mannerisms were EXTREMELY annoying and totally unbelievable. It is not often that a film evokes such a strong negative reaction from me, since by now it seems that MOST people at least know how to put them together with some degree of competency. Sure, there are MANY movies that may leave me unmoved, or I find that they don't do much for me, or it turns out not to be a type that I normally would like. But, THIS time, I can honestly relate to Moristang's use of the word 'Painful', and even more so as the movie progressed. I mean, the premise certainly sounded interesting and mysterious; I'm SURE that the overall idea was good. But, GEEZ, the acting was SO dang awful, literally GRATING on the nerves the more the film progressed. Almost ALL of the interactions between characters, to me anyway, appeared to be forced, awkward, and TOTALLY unbelievable in ANY context. Sure, I understand that Anne's character had not interacted with actual patients before, but still, her amateurish manner was just about more than I could literally bear. Really...And, just to take one instance; the interaction between her and the supposedly 'Euphoric' guy was just about THE frigg'n worst I've ever seen, and I own and have seen a LOT of movies, let me tell you. All that smug, phony smiling and her little feigned, quiet, whispery little voice were almost enough to send me screaming through the house! Bloody AWFUL! Finally, there is the scene where she is going to meet him and there is this sudden gust of wind that blows a paper into her face and scares her causing here to give off a little scream. She looks up and the guy is right in front of her looking at her through a gate, very calmly and condescendingly, with this little DOUCHEY smirk on his face. Something that absolutely NO ONE would buy as any where NEAR a believable or realistic reaction in ANY way, shape, or form. That did it for me right there. I had to say to myself that that was quite honestly some of the worst acting (or perhaps direction) that I have seen in a very long time. So, all I can say is that I don't know if anyone else would be as sensitive as I am and react as violently negative as I did, but all I got out of it was cringing and pain. Pure and simple... Now, maybe others might not be bothered by these kinds of things and may be able simply to sit back and watch the story unfold and enjoy it. But, not me, let me tell you. When I say that I haven't seen anything so EXCRUCIATING and so poorly done in a long time, I truly mean it. With all my heart and soul...Like I said, maybe the idea for the story was pretty good; I was genuinely intrigued by the premise and there appear to be people in the movie that normally seem to be good actors, but for me personally, I could feel the nerve endings in my body singing shrilly in the utmost pain as I tried to watch this film.I RARELY ever take the time to write negative reviews; if you check mine, you will see that probably over 95% of the time I am writing at least somewhat of a positive review, usually to try to point out the good things in films where many others have P|$$ed all over them. I usually am EXTREMELY scornful of these jaded @ssholes claiming to be such authorities on film, and usually enjoy pointing that out. BUT... THIS time, I must sadly admit that the many detailed negative comments by others about this film appear to be quite true...
