bkoganbing I have to applaud both the real Patch Adams and the late Robin Williams for bringing his story to the screen for us. I really identified with the character, but that kind of approach to your job has its pitfalls.Back in my working days at Crime Vicims Board in New York State I thought as did Patch Adams not to just take a bureaucratic approach to helping victims at a crisis point in their lives. Think of them as human beings and not just claimants. It was rewarding, it put me at odds with some of my colleagues and supervisors. That kind of approach can also take its toll mentally on the individual. For any number of reasons I was glad to take an early retirement. But I didn't have nearly the educational requirements to enter that profession. And getting too much involved could make you a basket case. Look at how on MASH those doctors deal with the hell of war and the absurdities of their situation. How much more so with someone who already had mental health issues?Saying all that Patch Adams is a remarkable man and Robin Williams did a remarkable biographical film about him. Fictionalized a bit, but I think he got the right spirit for the part. Some other good performances are that of Carol Potter as the love interest, Daniel London as Williams's medical sidekick and Michael Jeter as the mental patient who awakens Patch Adams to his new approach to healing.Patch Adams got one Oscar nomination for musical scoring. Should have rated a couple of others including one for Williams.A fine film about an interesting man.
psamy2012 This film makes me cry every single time I watch it. This really captures your heart with emotionally elements used in it. Patch Adams displays many emotions within the film. I would say to anyone who has never watched it please do give it a try as it might surprise you. This is Robin Williams at one of his best.
adonis98-743-186503 The true story of a heroic man, Hunter Patch Adams, determined to become a medical doctor because he enjoys helping people. He ventured where no doctor had ventured before, using humour and pathos. I really can't understand how movies like Patch Adams get bad reviews i really can't and honestly Robin Williams is amazing in this film he brings this laughter and energy that only he knew how to make them work. The scenes with the patients such as him playing a Clown with some sick kids or helping a sick grandma finally eating are some of the most warm moments of this film. The big twist with Carin was shocking and Williams delivered not only in the humor aspect but also the drama. This is a very different role from the ones that he was most known for back in those days but it's not one of his worst as some critics made it sound like it's funny, sad and also inspiring and it's good to see one man that is just happy and not sad, depressing and angry against others, who tries to help people instead of just staying by the rules such as Bob Gunton who also is really good as the 'villain' of the movie. Overall Patch Adams is a great and underrated 90's Drama about Life, Friendship, Love and of course True Communication between a Doctor and a Patient.
nsb-48130 Patch Adams I really liked the movie, it's showing how important it is to do what you believe in. The importance of believing in your self. Sometimes you need to do what others don't believe in, to proof them wrong. And that's what this movie is all about. Do what is right for you as long as it does something good for others to. But it is also showing that the right thing, is not always the happy safe thing to do, because the main character falls in love with a woman from the school, and just when things gets really good between these two, something bad happens to her. It makes him leave the place he built up, because for a moment he can't see how this place can be right and good anymore. I love how the movie shows the effect of a hospital clown, how much happiness it brings to both children and adults! What it takes to help people, that it's more than just the right medication and getting healthy without fever. It's also the mental part, connecting with these people by talking to them, listening to them and show them you really care about them, and not just the physical problems. What this man did for our health care system is magnificent! He changed the way we saw the sick people, and how we need to help them, how happiness can heal a sick person, and make them motivated for changing their lifes. I just really think it's a good movie, you will get a good idea of what has happened in our health care systems, and how the nurses and doctors looked at patience before, and what's changed and how it's changed now. The main character is Robin Williams, and he plays the character so well.
