coxwain2488 This was on a "to watch list" for awhile and I never got around to it. I did not know it was a Canadian flick (or I did when added to list but forgot) First I noticed that the picture quality is top notch then within 2 minutes I found out it was Canadian. (from the movie itself) Now I know you are wondering why I mentioned it being Canadian so much? Well, It is because I find the majority of Canadian movies low quality in almost every way. Boring and poorly made. Now yes there is a few Gems and I think this is one of those. The plot line gets thin around 3/4s through but by then I was committed to watching it. The plot however improbable is original and deserves a nod for that. I gave it an eight which is high but being an older Canadian movie I think most will enjoy this even if the ending is a tad..... Kilakis <---- watch movie for translation.
Helena Darling Pontypool is one of the most thrilling films I have ever seen. Its central conception of the peculiar virus that infects the citizens of the small town is so original, that no viewer will ever see it coming. Although this big surprise comes up during the second half of the movie, the narrative keeps the viewer at the edge of his/her seat right from the first second by its ingenious introduction as well as its exciting characters. Stephen MacHattie is actually giving an energetic and fully consistent performance. Through the radio broadcast the characters and the audience can only guess what is going on outside. The contained radio station works in the beginning as a safe zone, but as the nature of the virus is gradually revealed and explained, the tension is being built up to the point where no one is safe! Finally a horror film that has no need for CGI and explicit scenes of violence to make it work!Watch the scene after the ending credits!
DogFilmCritic Thanks to a friend that recommended this movie I got to see how amazing this underrated film is. As the horror genera plots are very saturated, this movie takes a new angle.I had no expectations at all nor did I read what it was about ,I saw it and it blew my mind, this movie feels more like an intellectual film rather than a simple horror movie as it makes you think and use you imagination, a lot of it is tell rather than show as you have to paint images in your mind to get an idea of what's going on, it builds more in suspense and tension instead of shocking visuals and gore. Think of a cross between Orson Wells war of the worlds and George Romero night of the living dead. It can feel claustrophobic at times as most of it takes place in a basement with a blizzard going out side, the cold tones and the dark surroundings with a creepy atmosphere are all over the place it keeps you wanting to find out what's out there. My explanation or trying to understand what's the virusThe virus is part of that world, is an invisible entity and dose undeniably exist, the characters are aware of it. A event just happened and we will never understand it, it's a phenomenon if it defies logic then we disbelieve in its existence, accepting things we will never fully know the answer it's unquestionably, it's simply just a fact. In actual history there's what we know and there's a lot of it we don't understand
ezicat I would give this a minus 10 if it were possible. Seriously? Synopsis: 3 People not trapped in a radio station relay what's going on outside to their listeners. That's the whole bloody movie - at least up to 42 minutes, which is when I stopped watching. Couldn't get through this borefest.Nothing much happens in the first 20 minutes except for one idiotic jump scare. Hand on the window....oooooo scary! Then there is a blackface skit....yes, a blackface skit....oh yes, now I really care about the inhabitants of this dumb town, don't I? Then the reports started coming in. Then some idiotic lines in Spanish about not translating into English...Bottom line - stupid movie for stupid people...don't waste your time
